I have a new 2GB CF card I want to use for a wedding this weekend, but i'd like to test it first. I know windows/dos used to have a tool that would write to and read from each bit on a disk, is there anything similar around that will test CF cards? Free/open/comes with windows only please.

HDtach can test any kind of drive. I assume You mean speed test? Or do You mean durability testing?

I'm after a test that writes to every memory location on the card, then read from it, and checks that it gets back what it writes. I don't know what you'd call that type of test.

I think HDtach may be able to do that.

From the website http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach :
HD Tach will test the sequential read, random access and interface burst speeds of your attached storage device (hard drive, flash drive, removable drive, etc). All drive technologies such as SCSI, IDE/ATA, 1394, USB, SATA and RAID are supported. Test results from HD Tach can be used to confirm manufacturer specs, analyze your system for proper performance, and compare your performance with others. HD Tach is very easy to use, quick, and presents data in easy to read graphs, including the ability to compare two storage devices on screen at the same time for easy analysis.
