He had to have already known it was in there. The way he went right for that car, knew what window to break, and reached right in without even having to search the car for the bag shows that he must have watched the owner put something of value (could have been a camera) in the bag and then put the bag in the backseat. Whenever one is putting something of value away, look around first to make sure nobody is paying too much attention.

He obviously had wither scouted the vehicle out or saw the owner put something in that back seat.
I love how those two girls just kind of watched him do it and kept walking without making a peep.

Yeah, doesn't give me much assurance that if I were mugged on the street that anyone would come to my rescue.

I think it shows the value of not being careless, rather. I follow one simple rule: put the gear in the safest reasonable spot at all times. If that means I take it with me, I do. If that means I leave it in the trunk, I do. If it means I leave it at home, I do.

many security cameras have human operators. he did appear to be scoping out something in the beginning.

The camera appears to be over the street intersection like it is mounted on the signal arms.

Absolutely.
That and using some common sense when storing valuable items in your car.

Or having a very large and very aggressive canine companion. Perhaps a bit on the hungry side might not hurt.:)
More along the lines of reality, I take my kit with me ALWAYS. Even to the point of being seriously inconvenient. Oh, and did I mention I'm also insured?
But, that is definitely about how long it takes a motivated and experienced thief to lift your goods. Should be mandatory viewing for anyone who wants to keep their gear theirs.

If you can not take it with you (and you have no canine), find a way to lock it down to something in the car.

If you absolutly must leave your stuff in the car then stop and stash/secure your gear BEFORE you get to your final destination.

+1 on this... If I know that I'm going to drop by somewhere afterwork, I put my laptop in the trunk behind couple empty boxes with shipping peanuts in the trunk.

I have a specific insurance policy for my gear for just that type of scenario.
