A friend of mine likes nautical things. Would a framed print of this image be a decent gift, or should I hang out at the docks some more.

Any comments or criticisms appreciated.

That is soooo tough for me to comment on. I see this type of thing everyday as a boat builder. It is so common that I probably have hundreds of photo opportunities around work but I would never see them where as others would pick them out in a snap.
So from a boat lovers point of view, ya cool, but from an artistic point of view, hmmmm.

The top left corner is messy, where you see only part of a black round thing. I'd want to get rid of it. Also I wonder where the rope is going at the right hand end of picture. "rope stops here" makes more sense if you can see where it came from. The moss on the end of the rope is nice. Just one person's 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the comments. When I saw the cleat on the deck of that ship, I knew I wanted a picture of it. Problem was how to compose? I wanted to lay on the deck and try a shot from there, but I knew my wife would kill me for making a spectacle of myself. In retrospect, I should have tried a shot from the deck because she would have forgotten by now, and I would have the picture I really wanted.

on thing that might help that shot would be converting it to B&W, the biggest problem with this shot is the busy top part, esspecialy top left as David alread said(I would have played with it in PS to show you waht I mean but I can't save it from that site)... I also think that the shot would have benifited from a different perspective (as you have already noted) but I still think that with a little creative work in PS it can be made to look OK, maybe even good enough for a gift (esspecialy since your friend liks the subject already).

It's funny that I have converted and printed other pictures in B/W and didn't even think to try that with this image. Brain fade rears it's ugly head once again. I will give that a try tonight! I haven't submitted the picture yet for printing and am glad I haven't. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am a sailor -- but "much" smaller boads and windsurfing.

I like your shot. I like old boats too. So it is a fine shot. But I would like to see the best from a set that includes the boat too. No.. what I want is an image that makes me want to recite a John Masefield poem like "Sea Fever".

Conk took a great set of the Tall Ships in Vancouver last year. A number of yeers ago when I was in a shipyard the closest that I came was a series of 4 ft to 2 ft brassy props. But no Masefield.

I know the feeling. The stirr is there.
