View Full Version : LCD image unflipped when rotated

I have a G2 that's about 2 months old. It's been working perfectly until today. The LCD shows a properly rotated image (shooting or replay modes) only when opened 180 degrees to the left. If I tilt the LCD 180 forward so that the LCD faces in the same direction as the lens, the image is *not* reversed!
If I fold back the LCD against the body (to use the LCD as the viewfinder), the LCD switches off completely! If I shut the G2 off and turn it on again while in this folded back viewfinder position, there is no startup music/image, and the the screen stays off! The same is true when in the replay mode.
I have not noticed any other problems with the camera, and it has not sustained any damage. I would appreciate any insight from all you experts out there!
Thanks,
Carlo

probably just wear and tear in the "joint" mechanism ... send it in for warranty ...

This is a known problem according to Canon support. I have the same problem with my camera. It requires a service to fix it.
No other problems arise from this issue. The camera will continue to work fine, so don't worry about using it if you can't get it repaired right away.

Jason,
Thanks for your reply. This makes me feel a lot better. What's the technical term Canon uses for this defect-- I'd like to sound intelligible when interacting with them.
Thanks,
Carlo

Wish I knew the technical term for it.. But I wasn't given one, and I doubt there is one.
All I know was that when I started describing the problem to the guys on the phone, they finished the sentence for me and anounced it as a known issue.

Slight twist (!) on the same problem.

Symptoms:

Brand new G2.

LCD display works normally when flipped out 180 degrees to the side.

Works normally, (ie reverses the image) when rotated to the front.

The problem arises when it is then folded back, flush with the camera, and facing out -- ie towards me.

According to the manual, "if it is not fully closed, the image will appear reversed and icons and messages will not display. Icons and messages will appear and images will show properoly (not reversed) when the LCD monitor is folded right against the camera until it clicks."

BUT on my camera, this doesn't happen:the image stays reversed.

I'm guessing it's a faulty switch or a circuit that isn't completed when it clicks, and it will therefore have to go in for service or replacement.

Before I go through all that, however, I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this, and if there is a self-help cure.

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

Have you been able to get Canon to fix this problem?

I have just realised that my camera has the same "feature"

Do you know what the problem was? Have they charged you?

Regards
