Best for Landscapes

Going to finally get my 20D this week. Mainly doing landscapes so which lens is best for that subject out of the kit lens 17-85F4-5.6 or the 17-40 F4 L.

Don't have any of these lenses, but the 17-40 should definitely be the better (and faster) lens. Advantages of the 17-85 are longer reach and IS.

Get the 17-40 and the Tamron 28-75/2.8!

I do mainly landscapes and for that I use the 16-35,and they are taken around the 16-25 mm range most of the time

Speed is not an issue for me as i like to have plenty of foreground interest and so use an aperature around f16-f22

So having written the above information which has nothing to do with your original question......I'd suggest you go fo the 17-40 because the optics are the better out of the 2 in my opinion.

Plan ahead a bit. I'd suggest the 10-22 efs, and the Tamron 28-75 (and maybe later the canon 70-200/4 L) all 3 zooms take 67mm filters. About $1600 total for the 3. Nice coverage with good glass.

The Canon 10-22 takes a 77mm filter.

17-40 for better glass. I will be buying a 20D plus lens soon and this is the combo I am going for.

Current owner of a 17-40mm, ex-owner of the 17-85mm. Get the 17-40mm. Period.

I really recommend u buy the 17-40L, b/c that's what I have currently.

I went to a camera shop few times to test between 17-40L and the 17-85 IS.
I used my friend as a model to test. Using rebel XT as body. pictures taken with same setting
The 17-85 IS was good; however, when I use the 17-40L to take the same pic, the pic from 17-40L is SIGNIFICANTLY sharper. Esp when I zoom in on the LCD in the eye area, it is kind of blurry with the 17-85IS, but resonably clear with the 17-40L. So, I say 17-40L all the way!!! (price diff is not that much too). Try it yourself frist. You will like the 17-40L. If you decided to go with the 17-85, don't play with the 17-40L b/c that's why I end up with a 17-40L :o and u will never buy a non-L lens again. (my next one is gonna be 70-200 F2.8L :evil:

Thanks for all your comments. By the weekend I will be the proud owner of a 20D with 17-40L, with my head in a few manuals and hopefully shooting like crazy very very soon :lol:
