View Full Version : Photography project ideas?

I am feeling somewhat uninspired at the moment, I just cannot seem to photograph anything but my three-month-old daughter, which of course is great, but her being so young the variation I get in the photos is a bit limited (or is it just my lack of creativity at the moment?).

I normally love photographing nearly anything, so I just need a little creative boost that I was hoping you lovely Canon-forum people could help me with.

Has anyone got any ideas for photo projects I can do, maybe resulting in a series of ten photos or so?

Thank you all in advance! :-D

i recently joined Model Mayhem (don't know if that is just a US/Canada thing?) anyways I got lots of responses and am super pumped to get shooting some models soon! Yes, i'm married, and I didn't think my wife would like the idea of me shooting other girls, but she is all for me enjoying my "hobby" and as long as they are wearing clothes then it's cool with her. :) It's not really about shooting beautiful women- I just love shooting people in general. I love shooting weddings but only find the chance every so often, plus I like working one-on-one more I think.

Dunno if that is any help to you, but it's got me inspired again.

I usualy get inspired by re-reading "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
Last time I got so inspired, I was shooting my curtains!

I'm just going to put this out there, and I'm really am not trying to offend anyone here...

...but...

I find pictures of kids so unbelievably boring.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure everyone's kids are lovely, and I certainly can appreciate good photos that might contain kids, but as a general subject?

Zzzzzzzzz.

I don't have kids and maybe one day I might see things differently. But for now...I don't blame you for being uninspired.

Having said all that...I'm not a completely bad person, and I'll even try to help;

This thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=551251)is good for a laugh, and gives an insight to how a little idea can grow into a great one.

This site (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/) is an amazing collection of photographs from all over the world that is updated a couple of times a week. It never ceases to amaze me, inspire me, and make me realise that I have so very, very far to go...

Hope either/both helps you finds a little inspiration.

Sometimes it can just take a drastic change in your point of view. Why don't you think about getting a new (secondhand even!) MP-E 65mm Macro...?

5x is a whole new world!!

I've spent quite a bit of time working in Europe and on weekends would give myself a single subject project. A couple of examples:
Doorways--every city I've been to in Europe has marvelous old and new doorways. They are often crooked, unpainted, or garish. Same goes for windows and window boxes.
Dogs--In Prague, dogs were everywhere, usually tied up outside a shop waiting patiently for their owners. They are also found in restaurants (against the law here in the States) lying beside the table.
Surely, living in Norway you can find SOMETHING to photograph?

Thanks for the input!

I am probably too amateur yet to shoot professional models. But models nonetheless, in form of my sister, friends, parents, grandparents... I'll try to get some different photos of them. Fully clothed.

I have wanted to get this book for so long, I guess it's a bit crazy not owning that book when I still have lots to learn in terms of exposure. Going to Australia later this year and want to take advantage of the amazing light there. So thank you, I have now ordered the book and can't wait to read it! :D

I agree that photos of kids can be much of the same, because I think if the parent is the photographer they always see something new every day in their child. These subtle changes may not be as obvious to anyone else. But if you get it right, shooting kids can also produce the most real, candid and amazing photos. I've seen some fantastic children's photographers who are able to capture everyday moments in simply beautiful ways. I look forward to the day my daughter is able to communicate more with the camera and interact more with people.

Thanks foir the Ducky-link, gave me a good laugh!

As for the other link, I haven't had time to look at the site properly, but at a glance there seems to be a lot of variety and inspiration to be found.

Thanks!

A new lens is a great idea. I had just bought a 50mm 1.8 (cheap, but I loved it for something different to the kit lens), but it was stolen along with my camera. So I had to start buying all over again, and I now have a wishlist of lenses I'd love to get, but that are a bit out of my budget at the moment.

I do like taking macro photography though, so a lens that allows me to get up close with subjects is definitely on my list.

Yeah, when travelling I usually do not have any problems finding things to shoot, as everything is seen with fresh eyes.

I live in a fairly small town where it rains a lot, so the light isn't much to jump up and down about. However, there is a fantastic coastline that I could probably take more advantage of photography-wise.

What about the aurora, I was in Norway for a week in March, and travelled from Narvick to Kirkenes, I wasn't there to photograph the aurora, but hoped to experience them, it was no show untill the last night, and then they appeared. Not good photos, but MY photos non the less.
It was very cold dark, I was wearing gloves, and I was rushing to get the shots, they only lasted a couple of minutes.

I've only been into photography for a couple of years, I wouldn't say I'm "professional" (maybe semi-pro?) but always improving with time. Likewise, the model that I shot (and others I plan on shooting) are also "amateur" and we are doing shoots on TFCD (time for CD) basis (to enhance our portfolios, nobody is getting paid). If you have any interest you should check out modelmayhem.com and just be honest with people.

But shooting family and friends is great too. :)

I ended up being laid off not to long ago.. So I put every penny I had left over into photography BUT as soon as I started to overthink I just got a mental block whiched caused all my creative skills to vanish which equaled being uninspired. Try not to overthink, Put on a quentin terino film on and pick up a few art books, the art books can be Dali etc I find such surreal stuff gets my juices following in photography.

Body parts could be a good project. (Hands, Ears, Nose etc....)
Look into photojournalism ask a hospital/old peoples homes if you could speak to some people, you could base it on birth and death?
Or models, but you might feel like you are lacking skills if you have never done them before which some people might find a big jump.
