Here's the item:

Someone offered to give me there's....but I can't tell for sure if it would fit my 580ii.

I was previously going to try and make one of these flash bouncers myself, but this would seem to accomplish about the same thing....and save me the hassle of having to do it.

Any thoughts? Would their be an advantage still to building my own?

That's just a big-ass bounce card that's velcroed on. Nothing special about it.

That's what I thought too....but if someone were giving this to you for free??

IOW, would a DIY bounce card work better?

I'd take it off their hands at that price. I probably wouldn't use it, but if i didn't pay for it there's no cost/benefit analysis required.

The only cost would be him mailing it to me.

I know a lot of guys here frown on buying $40-50 "Fong Dong"-like gadgets that promise to help in diffusing flash...and I've noticed that many advocate making their own out of foamy components from a local craft store. The biggest knock on the Fong-Dongs seem to be that they are just way overpriced.

That's why I'm curious if I should even mess with something like this.

It's up to you whether you want to use it or not. It's nothing special so making your own would take 2 minutes at most.
