I'm looking to get a 35mm film scanner to archive to digital a good number of negs and slides I have as well as any film I may shoot in the future. There a few out there from reputable manufacturers that I have read reviews on and it seems there are either quirky software or malfunctioning hardware issues with them. I'm probably looking to spend somewhere between $250-$550, would like batch scanning capability, USB2 hookup (WinXP OS), and not sure if something out at 5400 dpi capability would be a bit of overkill.

The Nikon Coolscan V is one of the best film scanners out. I have the IV. If I still shot slides I would buy the V.

for the price range you probably gonna have to get the Minolta 5400 II or the original.

What kind of results are you getting with your 300D? and that slide copy stand?
If they are acceptable could you give some instructions if I want to give a try myself?

"What kind of results are you getting with your 300D? and that slide copy stand?" Pretty good I think. Look at the pics below & judge for yourself.
I picked this shot because of it's high contrast range. Shot in RAW w/no post processing or sharpening on the 1st crops. No noise reduction on either, just some layer masking on the 2nd with a touch of USM sharpening before the conversion from tiff to jpeg.
Oh, & the 2nd pic is about a 70% crop of the horizontal slide.
Do you have macro capability?
I'll be glad to help out. Please ask any questions on the "Cobble" thread so other people who are interested can see the answers.
