You and your partner are the proud parents of a sweet, angelic six-year-old daughter. She is your only child. Due to pressures of having to make a living (you are not all that well-off) you need to employ a non-residential nanny to look after your daughter. Being somewhat restricted by your income, you chose someone from a 'reasonably respectable' agency, and she has been with you for six months.

You come home one day to discover a framed portrait image of your daughter. It was shot by a 'professional photographer' whom you later discover is just an early-retired customs officer with an interest in photographer, who thought he could make some extra retirement cash from his life-long hobby and has set himself up in a studio. He does not have a police check.

Would you....

Id talk the the nanny... and have a discussion with her about how you feel.

He does not have a police check.

I'm not sure that the police will do a background check on someone just because you are unsure as to whether or not you think you can trust them to take portrait photographs.

As for his status being a retired gent from a service such as Customs and Excise, obviously to have been employed there he'd have had a clean police record up until his retirement anyway. I take it you are inferring that to be a professional someone must have some form of degree in photography, not just be a keen amateur who decided they had the skill and ability to turn it into a job.

What exactly are you worried about? There is not enough information in the original post to give any reasoned opinion. For instance, was the nanny there while the photographs were taken - if so, what's the problem?

Four out of six say no to the gift....

And BTW - it does not matter how many people in the poll take the gift, four have said no, and if you were the photographer taking a shot for one of those four, what then?

There is no law that a photographer needs a police check, is there? I've never heard of that.

Very likely. Have you not heard how trendy it is to do studio shots of clients sans chaussure?

Not that I am aware of, which is why I didn't say that. But I guess it might be reassuring to a client.

By "sack the nanny" does that mean go to bed with her? I'm picking that one. :)

What then?

Why, as the photographer, would I care? That's between the nanny and parents.

Opps, I slipped.

How about everyone acts like the mature adults, and proffesionals they are supposed to be?
