canon G3-camera error

Today I purchased a Canon G3 camera hoping to take portarit photos remotly( from PC).But after loading the remote capture software and connecting the PC USB and the camera, while trying to shoot from the PC the error message "check the lens cover and the cable connection .Then reconnect " appears. Iam using win 98 SE. any one have any idea what is wrong with my system.On the camera display it shows P6 .Is It refres to PC?

P6 is actually Pb - playback. This suggest the PC connection is not working, the display should say PC.
Can you download pictures?
The camera should switch on automatically when you connect the USB. When you run the capture software and connect to camera it should go into record mode. Make sure the lens cap is off.
If you have a USB scanner as well try disconnecting it.
