580 & lens hood

Everywhere I've read, it says not to use a lens hood with the speedlite as you'll get vignetting. Does anyone have any thoughts on that as to what to do when shooting outside, high noon or so, with the 580 as fill flash? And if not using the hood, how to avoid lens flare? Thanks!

Yep use a hood, you'll not get vignetting unless it's a really wide angle lens IIRC.

The only time I have read not to use the hood with the flash is when it can cast a shadow of the hood.

So, with the 17-40L lens, you think there's a possibility of vignetting? Thanks!
