After purchasing a new monitor I naturally want to get the best performance from my monitor. My laptop has a VGA and HDMI output but does not have a DVI output. The monitor is the Dell 2209WA so it has USB input, VGA, and DVI. DVI is of course the best but I do not have a DVI output on my laptop. Does anyone have any experience with using an HDMI output on a laptop to DVI input on a monitor? Would this be a better solution than using the VGA output on my laptop? Thanks

It'll work fine if you use a dvi-hdmi adapter, since they are pin for pin compatible for use in computers (but pin placement and counts are different, so you need the adapter). You really don't need it though, VGA is perfectly fine, though some laptop graphics chips tend to run a bit hotter with VGA rather than HDMI (not really an issue in most cases).

Also, unless you have dual-link HDMI on your laptop (unlikely) you can only get 1920x1080 out of it. VGA is probably the better solution if you have a standard 23" or larger display.

you can get 1920x1200 @60hz from single link. Dual link is really only needed once you get into the 2560x1600 display range, but those are almost all 30"
