For landscapes and some mid range photography, what is the best all round lens to buy? I want to replace the Canon 18-55 f3.5-5.6 which came with my 300D. I am looking for a fixed f2.8 zoom of similar range. I've tried the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 but it's not wide enough yet certainly produces some excellent results. I've been warned off Sigma, is this good advice? Sigma offer a close replacement with the 18-50 f2.8... any advice would be welcome. JET, New Zealand.

Please do not cross post. However, this is the proper forum for the thread. Maybe a moderator could consolidate the two. You can check your other thread for my response. Welcome to the forum!

Edit the post in the other forum, there's a check box at the top that should let you delete the post/thread... maybe. Otherwise a mod will fix it up.
It's not fair to discount Sigma, they're a good manufacturer, lenses should be compared on a lens-to-lens basis, not manufacturer-to-manufacturer. The Sigma 70-200 F2.8 apparently holds its own against the Canon version, or is at least very close.
