I need to get a profile sorted for a HND course in photography, I dont know how big to make it and what kind of images to put in there and how to lay it out! I'm so stuck right now. I've till the 2nd of september.

Portfolios can be any size, really, but the bigger the better. There are tons of different thoughts as to how to lay them out: only one size; only one direction; only a certain type of finish; etc.

My advice would be to print about 8x10'' or so, with a glossy finish to show the detail in your pictures. The main piece of advice is don't cheap out on the prints!! You are trying to show off your work, don't ruin it with a poor quality print!

You think 20 images at 8x10 would be fine? OR would they likely to expect more...

Its always a balancing act. I have more than 20 in my portfolio, but because I am still at the beginning of this endeavor, I do not have a true "theme" of the work; rather I have my best shots overall, showing some sports, still life, events, weddings and portraits.

I think 20 would be OK if you only have 20 images that are truly good enough for a portfolio.
