OK. Several POTNers have complained about threads that start off like "If you had the money what camera/lens would you get?" Too much fantasy, not enough reality?

Well, how about the reverse. With what you know right know either through direct usage or through extensive readings: If you started all over again and wanted to get into DSLR photography and HAD VERY LITTLE MONEY, what single camera and lens would you get?

My vote is a used Rebel XTi and a used EF 35/2.0. I've had a XTI for almost 3 years and love it. The 35/2.0 would give me the view of my old film SLRs and would be fast enough for most of my needs.

You couldn't go wrong with a used 20D and a nifty 50.

20D + EF-S 17-85 IS.
Reasonable lens, nice range, and not too pricey.

My first DLSR and lens was a 20D and a 50 1.8, and I'd do it again if I had to.

I now wish I started with a 20D instead of a XTi! :)

ya, i'd get a 20d w/ 50 1.8 if I had to sell all my stuff and get the cheapest setup.

For absolute lowest cost, a used XT, XTi or 20D (whichever I could get cheapest) and 18-55 kit lens. If I could stretch it a little more I'd replace the kit lens with a Sigma 17-70.
