hello,

i have photographs that need to be posted on line for magazines to download and use for print in various magazines (for a musician). i have always been confused by resolution. my camera produces RAW files that show at 220 ppi (approx.) not 300, which is what I am used to seeing.

what size makes sense for this application? connection speed is not an issue. it's assumed that most major publications are not working with dial up modems (i hope).

is there one set way to prepare files to be placed on the record labels website?

thanks!

when you increase the ppi or dpi it will reduce the dimensions. it all depends on the application.

in photoshop, go to image, image size. if you check only "constrain proportions" you can adjust the resolution and the dimensions will adjust accordingly and automatically.

most glossy publications need at least 300 dpi. newspapers run around 180-200 dpi.

i have no idea if this is going to help. -nick

These may help - you can usually set in the raw program what PPI to convert to - so you can convert to 72PPI or 300PPI - i suspect theres a setting for you RAW conversion to 220PPI

the image is really dependent on the number of pixels you have
so a
3000 pixel x 300 pixel
will print @
10" x 1" if set to 300PPI {number of pixels / pixels per inch - 3000/300 x 300/300 }
100" x 10" if set to 30PPI {number of pixels / pixels per inch - 3000/30 x 300/30 }
1000" x 100" if set to 3PPI {number of pixels / pixels per inch - 3000/3 x 300/3 }

now like the newspaper the more pixels you have in an each the better th equality - up to what the eye can resolve - and this is usually around 300 PPI

some people go to 240 and say you cannot tell the difference - other go as low as 180PPI and ague about the viewing distance etc.

maybe these will help

... both responses were very helpful. i really appreciate it. i hate not being certain on something that keeps coming up and there seems to be no solid "correct" response readily available out there. thanks very much!
