Is godaddy.com a good place to buy a domain from and host it ? They look like they have good prices but I was wondering about the service and other issues people might have had.

Oh man... you can start some flames by bringing up godaddy. I've had fantastic service from godaddy, and have used them for ~8 years, for several hosing plans and many domains. You might also do a search here for hosting, questions about who to use seem to come up every day.

I have never and will never use godaddy.com - what they advertise and what they sell is two different things. My sites are through hostdog.net which is not the cheap option but I get a lot for what I pay. One of my domains is through 1&1 and they offer a lot for the price - http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=19882464 - HIGHLY recommend them as an alternative to godaddy!!

we've never had any problems with their service. their 24/7 support is also really good, their reps are pretty knowledgeable

I have LOTS of domains - all through GoDaddy -- I have several sites through GoDaddy also -- I have never had a problem -- when I do have to call for any issue- they are quick and take care of it right away --- I have noting but good things to say about godaddy.

Care to explain what you mean about what they advertise and what they sell being two different things? I have several GoDaddy domains and never had a problem that was not resolved very quickly.
If you are referring to the T&A used in their ads then that of course is a personal issue, but they are certainly no worse than many other mainstream companies advertising.

Godaddy are a bit of a pita, their website has constant unnecessary upsells, it's confusing, and their customer service is terrible imho. I register with them only because I always have, if I found another registrar for similar prices i'd move.
Host with HostGator (http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=m96rty-hr), they're great.

Look at 1&1 - you get more and it's cheaper Tim - at least it looked that way in my comparison.

As Tim mentioned the upsell is what gets me. They advertise $1.99 domains and they are not unless you get this, that, and the other thing. That * annoys the hell out of me be it a domain service, an airline with hidden fees, or any company for that matter. I just went to the site to get a $1.99 domain and the cost is $33.03 and I took the cheapest option they had. YET, on 1&1 I believe I paid $6.74 ($8.99 before discount for whatever they had going on) and got email with free re-direct, a graphic archive, web-builder, can point my domain to any URL for no fee, etc. Most the stuff I don't use except the email/url forward but it's a great price for a starter kit and over 3x cheaper than godaddy with no hidden BS.
As for the T&A - I have absolutely no problem at all with that. It's why I checked out the site in the first place besides the $1.99 (er, $33.03) domains.

I agree with you all about the upsell...the site looks like a dogs breakfast...but...I have purchased those $2 domains you speak of...you just need to know how to wade your way through the gargage I think.
I might need to check out 1&1 though, sound good and I have several expiring soon.

Seriously, moonfruit.com, you can transfer domain names, sites look amazing and are SO easy to manage. I run my business through them. People think I hired an expensive company to set up my website. You can look at sites people have on their website. By the way, I don't work for them or get anything for mentioning their site, I just love it!

Price isn't my primary concern, web hosting is incredibly cheap compared with other business costs. I've hosted with Hostgator for two years now, their service has been the best from any web host i've ever had. I pay $10/month, and for that I host about fifteen domains and get two million hits a month, many of them from database driven websitse. Uptime is between 99.9% and 100%. THAT is value.

I'll echo what tim said - hostgator are excellent

I'm sure you threw out the 99.9% just randomly, but that's 8 hours of downtime/year. That would be pretty bad service, actually, and GoDaddy has not had that kind of downtime in the years I've used them. $6/month, multiple hosting domains, etc, etc.

That's the reason I use hostdog.net for hosting, 1&1 is only domain for one of my sites that's hosted under hostdog. I've had maybe twice over 10 years of down time and it was moving server type thing and nothing more.

I just know there's a bunch of nines. Most monthly it comes back at 100% uptime, some months 99.9% or so. I just know it pretty much always works.
I worked for Sun Microsystems when I got out of uni, they aimed for five nines (99.999%). That's pretty tough.

Since I've been with hostgator (about 18 months) I can't recall any downtime at all.

I can not comment about the service but when buying a domain think of seo name.

http://www.1and1.com is having a promotion of free 1 year hosting with domain name until 8/31
One thing I like about hosting at 1&1 is that I can point each domain to a separate folder. That way I can host my blog, my site, etc with the root pointing to each different folder. If that sounds like techno-babble, PM me for more info.

That's standard, the way everyone does it AFAIK.

I tried another host before, and tried to do that, but they only limit to 5 domains or stuffs like that. Even then, they only allow pointing to the root and not to a subfolder. But the only thing i like about them is their servers are not overloaded and feels more 'snappy'

I like godaddy when they have their $.99 domain fire sales...then, I wait 60 days and transfer the domain elsewhere. I've never used them for hosting.
