I'm looking to get a flash for my 20D. I noticed a lot of people have the 550ex but I wasn't looking to spend $300 on a flash. Will the 420ex be a good choice?

Thanks,

Chris

That will depend on what you are looking for in a flash. If all you want is something that will always work in automatic ETTL mode with no manual overrides or multi-strobing capabilities, and you don't plan to use the flash in a very large hall or auditorium, then it should be fine for your needs.

I was in the same position yesterday. After looking at all the specs and understanding the flexibility of the 580EX vs. 420EX, I opted for the 580EX. I then spent time at my camera shop comparing with the "experts" and was sold that if you are going to buy a flash get the best one. For just fill, use the pop up but for really nice flexible results that look awesome use the best tools you can get your hands on.
