View Full Version : Remote Switch for 20D

Is anyone else experiencing the same frustration: to attach the remote switch you need to [partially] remove a rubber cover... the cover has dual duty and also protects other input/output devices. When I connect the remote switch, the rubber cover is always hanging there, half on, and I have to keep reattaching the upper portion covering the other devices.
It seems like such a cracker-jack set up and out of place on the 20D. Am I missing something?

It's better that it was on the T90. The cap was all too easy to lose there - it was a separate screw-in plastic button. Ask me how I know this.

Thanks for responding, Jon. I take it you are missing a plastic button? :(
The instructions that came with the switch indicated that a small screw needed to be removed from the camera to insert the switch. That small screw is then inserted directly into a threaded hole in the switch so it does'nt get lost. Sounds like a great solution.
I got the recommended switch for the 20D... just wish the instructions applied to the 20D as well!

I've never liked the rubber cover on my 20D. As you mentioned, whenever you plug in the remote or usb, the cover is half on. I wish there would be a solution for it.....

And with the rubber cover being half on and half off, the half on portion is never completely tight. I just can't believe, on a camera with so much going for it, Canon couldn't do better than this.
Thanks for confirming I wasn't doing something wrong, Leorooster. Nice to have some company. ;)

I just can't imagine the 1 series is made this way, as they are supposed to be weather proof. Anyway, it's my pleasure to keep you company.;) ;)

Yep. It came off the camera, wasn't lost while switch was attached.
The D60 also has the same rubberized snap panel arrangement to cover the various ports, so it's not just the 20D. I 'druther they just used a mini-stereo plug on it than the N3 connector you can't get anywhere.

I love the my 20D .. but I DO miss the features of my film Canon 10s. The infrared remote was free on that one, along with multiple exposures and the timer interval feature (which canon wants $200 for on its wired remote.)

Check ebay for the timer remote. I've been watching the prices on there for awhile as I'm debating about buying it. Usually cheaper and still new.

The only thought that crossed my mind when I first attached my remote was that I hoped the rubber was good quality and the flexing wouldn't cause it to split one day. Otherwise I've thought nothing of it. Maybe it's because so far I've mainly used the remote/timer at night. Out of sight, out of mind ... But now you've mentioned it, I might get frustrated

Maybe I got a special 20D, but the rubber cover on mine is only hinged on the top part -- the part which covers the remote connector is simply a flap attached to the top part, and I have no problem with uncovering the bottom part.
I don't mind if the external flash cable socket is exposed -- on my AE1 film body it was always exposed, nothing bad ever happened.
But I don't have a problem with uncovering the remote socket and leaving the Video out and Digital out ports covered nice and tight.

You are lucky, dhbailey. I am forever trying to keep the top portion attached. Do you want to trade 20d's.:D

Mine would appear to be the same as dhbailey. Perhaps the top bit stays "plugged in" because I have only used the top plugs a few times. It looks the the rubber cover just pushes into a slot, so I imagine you could get a replacement which should stay snuggly in place.

I just might do that, lancea. I've never used the upper plugs and only first removed the cover when I needed to plug in the remote switch. I guess this would be a request to Canon customer service?
Thanks to everyone for your input... I'll let you know if Canon helps out here.

Good luck (I sure you won't need it!). I just noticed you've got the lens combination I would have got if I had a chance to revisit my purchases - except that I'd still get the 70-200 f/4 for reasons of $$$. While the 17-40 is a great lens, I think the kit lens is pretty good so would instead purchase a 10-22 or a macro. But now I've got the 17-40, it's an investment :)

Thanks, Lancea. I wish I had gotten the 70-200mm with IS... but also didn't for reasons of $$$. Then I might not have needed the remote switch, and wouldn't have started this thread in the first place! ;)

If I did have lots of $$$, I would still get an f/4 because the IS adds even more weight to the 2.8. But wealth would buy me both - the light one for when I'm walking, and the heavy one for when I'm travelling by Lexus :)

And if I win the lottery, I would have one camera for every lens... to keep sensor dust down. I did the sensor dust test this week and my-oh-my...

Where does the remote go on the 350D?Left-hand side of the camera, but from the picture in the reviews it is a different kind of socket. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/page5.asp.

I did the sensor dust test this week and my-oh-my... My father (who's 85 soon and was very good at making things) used to often tell me "rust is the enemy of all tools". Perhaps he would now say "dust is the enemy of all ...". But I've decided that I will not do a sensor test because, like a child that doesn't cry until they see the blood, there is no dust until I see dust on my shots! And there has been, but so far a blower-brush has done the trick. It doesn't seem possible to buy a rocket blower in New Zealand, but they do look kind of cute (in a 60s kind of way).

I keep hearing reference to the rocket blower but have never seen one. I found a nice little blower at Walmart for about $7 (did you ever hear of Walmart, Lance?). Just the same, I still have sensor dust big time. :(

I assumed they were called that because they were powerful, but one day I couldn't resist and looked them up at B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=259157&is=REG.
Walmart hasn't reached New Zealand, but last year I got stranded in Denver (at a hotel by the old airport) for two nights due to the final hurricane hitting Orlando. My bag was still in LA, but everyone told me there was a Walmart "just across the road". Turns out that means it is at least a mile away. Some kind strangers gave me a lift part of the way, and I walked back after dark. Both things are apparently not the cleverest thing to do. Walmart was by far the biggest store I've ever seen. But sadly I didn't get a blower! They did have shotguns for $99 though ... This year I'm off to Dallas, and a rocket blower will be on my list!

Thanks for the link, Lancea. Looks like a handy and lightweight gizmo that doesn't need batteries like the one I bought.
And thanks to everyone for your insights and help on my problem with my rubberized snap panel.:D

It's been nice talking with you. Hope you get rid of your dust, and get the snap panel sorted.
