Well today I went back to the spot where I last saw this Hawk and there she was. By the time I set up my tripod she took off and to my astonishment actually flew towards me, going for a kill. She was going for a chipmunk that got away.
I took a few of her on the ground and then she popped up on a branch just a few inches off the ground and I got the last shot. Taken with Pro1 with 1.5 Tele-converter from less than 20 feet away, 1 and 2 were taken in Av Mode 1/80th sec. F3.5 and #3 also taken in AV Mode 1/60th sec. F3.5

Man I am jealous, what a great picture. I have been trying forever to get that close but no luck. All my pics are from a good distance. Great job.

I'm jealous too :)
I have lots of these flying over the fields around my house, but I can never seem to get close enough to get such stunning shots... Absolutely beautiful..

Very nice pictures of a very beautiful bird! I've been hoping to get a picture of a hawk, but have only seen doves and woodpeckers and so on so far.... I have been planning to go out to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum sometime soon - they have a "Raptor Free Flight" on weekends where they let some owls and hawks fly around - they stay near an area that visitors can watch from and land on some small trees and cacti in the area, making it easy to get photos with a medium telephoto. I got some good photos with my A75 a couple months ago out there. I just got my 20D and a 70-300 telephoto about a week ago, so I haven't had a chance to get out there yet with the new camera. I could also spend an hour or more trying to get shots of hummingbirds there too....

Thanks for all the kind words. This hawk has been hanging around our local Audubon Society's property. She has been doing so since Easter. So, I've taken to calling her Lilly. Lilly seems very attracted to the cage of a captive adult male there. One of the workers there told me that she has taken scraps of food from the raptor handler and has even been seen trying to eat from a bird feeder.
Some at the Audubon have suggested that she may have been in captivity at one time and then released. Which may explain her acceptance of people. I tend to doubt this because she has not been banded. But, who knows? For now I will just enjoy the gift of her presence.
