Windows updated last night, and woke up to 3 computors with vista, that will shut down trying to start up. Only way to get computors to start was system restore to a date last month. Any one else have this problem? Is there a fix? I was just starting to like Vista and now this..... I have shut off windows auto update for right now.

Sounds like you lost power during the night as they were updating.

Sorry not to have any better news than this but the latest update sat well with all 3 of my machines. Haven't turned the laptop on yet so it hasn't received the latest update.

What flavor of Vista are you using? Mine is Vista Business, have not had any issues with updates as of yet. Of course as you've discovered, system restore is your friend. Good thing for you it was turned on.

Funny you should say that - my house suffered 3 mini power cuts last night as I was using the computer. It rebooted each time only for the power to cut halfway through the reboot...this happened 3 times and when I finally got it restarted I had a few problems with various programs that usually run fine. I've only had the thing for less than a week and that was not what I needed! Touch wood, it is working ok now...

APC has similar ones and those are sold in most major electronics stores in UK. I have a 1300VA 800W one myself... lasts me less than 10 min on 50% use thanks to i7+monitor+external drives

The problem is called Bluescreen, and their is no soultion as of yet from Microsoft. All 3 effected this morning were laptops, all running Vista Home with sp1. Didn't have any power shortage, but it happened during latest update from windows.

Very strange.

I have just updated Vista with no problems what so ever.

I can only suggest you try updating one them again, and if it works you can put it down to being a one off freak occrance effecting your house.

The problem is you have no idea how to debug computers, and I don't blame you, most people never trained themselves to do it.

The issue isn't a blue screen, the screen tells you there is an issue. Check that screen again, and take a photo of it, then upload that photo here. It'll have a code we can look at to tell you more about your problem. Also, have your install disk ready, because repair install is the first thing to do in your case where you can't boot. You can find, and should find, plenty of information on how to do a repair install from the microsoft website and various random others.

Or, and this is why MS included restore points, you can just roll it back and try again :)

Definitely give restore a shot.
