View Full Version : Anti-flash performers - taking matters into their own hands (or arms)

i saw this email from Bob Lefsetz' email newsletter...kinda funny.

Totally off subject but did you by any chance catch Tool at the epicenter show?

Maynard now wears a reflective arm guard on his right forearm.

Why?

So when people take shots of him with a flash it won't come out.

How long till all the celebs start wearing them?

Joke's on him, most of the shots with flash from the fans don't turn out anyways...

;)

Ha, that's pretty funny. Next he'll be sporting a suit of armor. I do feel his pain though - how many gigs have we all been to where the artist is baring their soul and trying to connect with people through their music, and in return they get a roomful of people brandishing ****ty camera phones?

Many of these are the same artists that call the paparazzi ahead of time so they will be waiting for them to take shots to hit the local gossip rags. I don't feel for them, at all.

Their fame and popularity is based on "exposure" as much as talent. They are public figures... so put up with it.

i don't think that Maynard fits that profile.

Probably not but why would he care if someone does or does not take his picture, considering that he charges for people to see him perform ?

i dunno. arrange an interview and ask him.

Funny thing is, all the shots I can find from that show have him at the back of the stage and on crutches. Maybe the arm band was a fashion statement and not an anti-flash statement?

Being that I know Maynard's eyes are very sensitive to light (this is why he only performs in dark areas on the stage), I suspect this statement was stretched or possibly re-worded a bit because of his medical condition (I don't think it's epilepsy but I could be wrong).

Unfortunately I can't find a pic but John Bush of the band Armored Saint used to perform one of their songs wearing a suit of armour ;-)

I suspect it's a load of bull**** as when I shot Tool the lights were low until the 'togs were out of the pit (one song) then they came up.

I've yet to see a gig where the artist demands that such people stop buying their tickets, merch and albums :D

I don't worship Maynard but yes, someone should ask him. I don't cover him and have no reasons to go out of the way to do so.

Sounds like his light sensitivity magically healed!
