Is this a good lens? I was thinking about grabbing it for a good wide angle for cars. Any one have any shots on cars with this lens? I like wide angle up close shots.

I am selling one in the classifieds if you are looking for it. Great price for a virtually brand new lens.

I wish I had the funds now. I'm looking at about 2 months.

I have the Tokina 17mm, and I absolutely LOVE it.
It has great colour, contrast, distortion and flare resistance (it actually beats the Canon L zooms in the last 2 categories).
It's built like a tank, all aluminum barrels with chrome plated brass mount plate. It has the smoothest manual focus ring of any lens available for a Canon, and includes a 3 year warranty.
What more could you ask for?

While I dont have any car pictures here are some samples:
- large closeup at F4 (http://www.mts.net/~lftbrain/20d/IMG_4032.jpg)
- 100% image almost directly into the sun (http://www.mts.net/~lftbrain/20d/IMG_7065.jpg)
- 75% of the pictures here taken with the Tokina (http://www.fotop.net/sharpnsmart/04092005)

Thanks Raj.
This lens is DEFINATELY worth the money. I don't think I've ever heard anybody have any harsh words to say about it.

You just made my mind up for me. Thanks! I would order it sooner but I'm going to order a flash first. Any body like the Sigma 500 Super?

i have the sigma 500 super and it's a heavy mother. it's great! i love the pictures i am able to from it. the only negative things about it are that it telescopes which makes it a little hard with the balance while hand holding it. use it with a tripod at first and learn to love it. it's a great zoom. i highly reccommend it.

well COKE CAN.....
i have been wondering about wide angles too after following your threads around as well as my own.
so i will add this to the list of choices.

as for the super 500. i am ordering mine either tonight or in the morning. but i have to get it ordered so it is here before i head on vacation on wed.
i have a friend who has one for his rebel and he loves it. i really want the 580 canon, but just cannot swing that kind of cash right now. so i am going with the sigma.

Coke Can - when you figure this out - let me know. I am running a simular thread trying to find a good landscape lens for a trip this summer. Tokina 17 is on my list as is the Sigma 15, Canon 17-40l and the Sigma 12-24..... Good luck!

my sigma is ordered along with alot of other toys.

lens i am considering to fit the niche of wide angle car photography.
canon 17-40
canon prime but not sure which one. have seen alot of good on the 28 but it is not wide enough i do not think.
tokina 17 atx pro

i just started this search so a small list

i plan on a tamron 28-75 but it will prolly not cut it at 28 for creative car shots as a wide angle would do better.

i have used the 18-55 USM kit lens and depending on how i am feeling and such it has been at 18-24 most of the time, but i have been trying so far to get the whole car it with a little distance between me and the car.
so i think i need to actually try to get closer with the same focal lengths to get more of an idea.

this is what i am doing with my friends tamron 75-300. playing to see what focal lengths i want/need. he bought it to see himself. he went with the 70-200/4 canon. i am not sure yet. i know i shoot alot at 200 or less, but have not tried to do any wildlife yet. so that will make or break the decision process i believe.

so yeah play with what you have and see how much wider you might want/need.

What's that?

It's the Russian Fishy.

Check it out here:

It's amazingly cheap at only $115 plus a $20 m42 to EOS adapter. www.dvdtechcameras.com is a reputable site.

Yes, it's manual focus and manual aperature, but it's pretty darn sharp for what it does and a cheap wide angle. I hope to get one soon :)
