View Full Version : 15-85 coming up?!?

Canon rumours is reporting that one of the new lenses might be a 15-85 IS USM to replace the 17-85 IS. Assuming the distortion problems of the 17-85 are resolved at wide angle, this could be my dream lens!! Doesn't have to be great, just good. 15mm would be wide enough I could stop thinking I need a 12-24.

So I assume the new lens would be EF-S?

if it is close to f4 at the long end, I'm interested.

only problem is then i might have to cross off the 85mm 1.8 from my wish list..... :(

Doubtful. I would plan on another f3.5-5.6 lens. Nikons 16-85 is not a speed demon, either, and would imagine that is what they are gunning for.
Canon rumors also says an 18-135 could happen, too, but I am more insterested in 3mm of wide angle than the 50mm of telephoto.

I guess this is better than the 28-135....

It's definitely going to be a consumer lens 3.5-5.6
Canon needs to make up some ground versus Nikon in that department.

Agreed, a good 18-135 IS and 15-85 IS would pretty much pull them even for crop zoom lens selection.

Those are some pretty freaking elaborate fakes if not. Good find!! Now we just have to see if they are reasonably priced.
I notice it says they are for the 7D, so that pretty much confirms the 7D is APS-C.

I call fake... the fonts are all off, the "ULTRASONIC" on the 15-85mm is just standard white text bunched up next to "IMAGE STABILIZER" and the lens lacks a gold USM ring... no Macro distance measurements printed either, if they're EF-S, why is the FL markings ring black instead of silver like every other EF-S lens? And "Canon" printed in the distance scale window? Really?

Interesting. The lenses look rather real to me but I have not really looked in too much details. We will know in a few days...

The 18-55 USM (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-18-55mm-3-5-5-6-Digital/dp/B0002Y5WXY) doesn't have a gold ring either.... that said, I hope your right, I would rather it be a mid-line lens instead of a low end piece of plastic.

I'd rather it be optically decent and affordable, like the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS. Build quality is for national geographic photogs to worry about. I just want good pictures.

I'm hoping this is a quality lens priced around $500-600 rather than something like the 18-55 IS. The range on this is outstanding, and if sharp enough it may replace my 17-40L.

15mm wide angle sounds great. I hope the image quality is acceptable. The translated page says it has an UD element, so they probably fixed the 17-85's CA problems.
If this is real, I finally see a replacement for my 18-55 IS coming. ;)
Now the next thing I need is a faster, better-built, ring-USM version of the 55-250. :p

I'll second that!
Though the 15-85 sounds like THE walkaround EF-S lens. The bad part of it being between 5-600 dollars would be that it's the same pricepoint as the 100mm macro... GAH! I don't want to have to pick another lens over that one when the time comes. This hobby has too many decisions...

70mm as a starting point on a 1.6x is frustrating IMHO.

Great lenses but the stabilized ones are too expensive (for me).

EF-S 55-400 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM anyone? ^^

I agree although my ideal would to see such a lens be faster and even in the $1000 - $1500 range. Maybe I'm just looking for a better range on the 17-55.

Funny this goes from a nice realistic lens rumor to unrealistic expectations. If you have seen any of the leaked pics, they are definitely not pro-grade. I would imaging they are similar in quality and price to the 18-200.

I think only the 15-85 said ultrasonic and no guarantee it is ring USM at this point is there?

The Chinese website says it is Ring Type USM. http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://blog.pchome.net/article/194951.html&ei=q7-XSuvDF9ihjAfZ_42kBQ&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522EF-S%2B15-85mm%2522%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive
EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM AF using the ring-USM (ultrasonic motor) to drive, EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is used in DC (direct current) motor.
Although the drive differently, but they are different according to their characteristics and high-speed auto-focus algorithm CPU (http://74.125.95.132/translate_c?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=http://hardware.pchome.net/cm/&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522EF-S%2B15-85mm%2522%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&usg=ALkJrhiqI5TjLt3hfyhdw5KWEsT77qdzig) (central processing unit), so as to realize high-speed auto-focus drive.
EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM using a ring USM, so support for full-time manual focus.
The so-called ring USM is a piezoelectric ceramic element to be composed of the stator of the ultrasonic vibration energy generated by the stator and rotor contacts into rotating kinetic energy technology.
High-torque output and fast response to the rapid co-coke. Also in ring USM there is still a significant feature of structure, that is, they will have little action sounds.

I always thought the gold ring looked cheap.

I liked the gold ring from the era of consumer ring USM lenses... that said, chances for ring USM should be good since I see a distance window on the lens...

It would be great if the 15-85 was constant f4 with the same
IQ as the 17-55. Sell it for $750 and I'd be happy.
