I`m using the canon eos digotal rebel and I took a picture and now the shutter is taking about a good minute to open or even more. I use this camera for work and need help immediately!!!

Have you turned the self timer on accidentally, or turned on mirror lockup (only available on hacked cameras)?

no, the self-timer isn`t turned on. I usually shoot with nikon (sorry guys) and the flash went on it tonight. I`m in the middle of work, my boss is not here...I guess I`ll just have to explain the situation to him tomorrow

If the shutter really is stuck, it's probably time to send it for repair, or to replace it. So what happens - you press the button to take the photo, it does nothing for one minute, then it takes the photo? Does the photo come out ok? Is it always the same delay until the photos taken?

I press the release to take the photo and it shows up on the lcd screen almost immediately (like normal) but the viewfinder is completely black, the mirror is up and now it is taking more than a minute between photos. I`ve tried moving the battery, taking it out, the camera occasionally blinks busy if I try to take a shot. I`ve never had this happen with this camera before. I`ve gone through err 99 before and had my boss send the camera in to be repaired. There`s no point in asking him because he doesn`t know much about cameras. Do you have any other suggestions. I appreciate what you`ve said so far. I know I`ll have to put off taking pitures for tonight anyways.

Sounds more like the mirror's getting locked up to me, as a fault rather than by design. How do you know the mirror's up? Did you take the lens off after the shot?
It does sound like repairs time.

yeah I did take the lense off, and you`re right, it is a mirror lock-up for sure. I was really hoping for an easy solution. I`m getting a little tired of explaining to my boss that none of the cameras he gives me to shoot with seem to work for very long. Probably has to do with the amount that they get used. (I work in a resort as a photographer here in mexico and shoot, on average, between 300-800 photos a day...and the temperature is getting hotter here.) I`ve worked in extreme cold temperatures with my equipment and know how it reacts and also in the caribbean so I know what can usually happen to equipent if you`re not careful. But this is a first for me!

Unless someone else knows how to fix it, it's probably time for a shutter/mirror replacement or a new camera. Good luck.

Hey I know this has nothing to do with my camera issue but I checked out some of your shots and thought it was cool to see alot of horserace shots. Funny cause when I was in college 5 years ago I did a whole series for 6months at a horse track. It`s a really good place to practice any types of photo techniques, especially for photojournalists.

If you're shooting 300-800 frames a day, your boss needs to get you a 1D series or he's going to have to keep buying you new cameras. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

A used 1D takes very good pictures (definitely sufficient up to 8"x10" prints) and is not much more expensive than a new 20D.
And even you will have a hard time breaking it :p
Best regards,
Andy

Are you using a Canon or a 3rd party lens on it?

I`m using canon lenses. They will be opening up a third shop shortly so I don`t know how willing they will be to equip 3 photo shops with expensive cameras. But I will definately suggest it to them.

Even though you're using Canon lenses, it's worth trying to clean/wipe the lens contacts on the camera and lens versus sending it in for service.
