You folks know I've posted lots of Moon pics in this forum, but I don't think I've ever tried it with anything less than a telescope. Well, I treated myself to a EF 70 - 300 so I thought I'd give it a try. I couldn't get anything decent without a tripod and mirror lockup and it sure looks little in the frame! But I got some good shots and here's one.

Stack of four images, 50D at 1/50 and 1/100 sec, f7.6, ISO 100, convert to B&W.

Very nice Rick but looks a little pixelated . Is this cropped at 100% ?

It is, I noticed it in the double spray jets from Proclus. I reduced its size from about 800 to 600 pixels to average out some noise and that may be what did it. I might give the PP another try later tonight.

FYI, here's the stacked original, with no processing or cropping if anyone wants to give it a shot.

Yeah thats just about the same as i get with my 75-300mm . Thats not a bad pict at all Rick . A little sharpening will pop it out .

Looks great Ron! I haven't had a chance to use the lens during the day yet, but I might use it tomorrow to stalk the wild hummingbird. It seems sharp enough.

I use to use it alot a couple yrs back for my hummers and i agree , it produced some sharp hummers . Had too much remodeling around the house this yr so didn't have feeders out for any hummers :( . But as for the lens , it's a good lens . Only problem i had was CA with bright objects :( . Check out my M42 on my website that was taken with my 75-300 at 300mm and you can see what i'm talking about .

Depends , sometimes we may use nothing if our focus is sharp enough . Focus is key word with the moon especially . but if we have a decent image we usually will try some a little if thats what is needed to make an image pop . Have to be very careful on contrast with astronomy images . Contrast can make an image pop but not always the correct way you really want an image to look .

The Moon looks so good tonight that I put away the 300 mm and dusted off the telescope. Stack of 15 images, 4" refractor, 900 mm (f/9), 1/250 sec, ISO 100.

Rick , that full moon looks great ! Sharp and lots detail . Refractors sure make a difference in image quality .

wow, that's a lot of detail for 300mm and no telescope
