Canon still design aps-c lenses !!? Make no sens to me. A few Time ago, I switched to FF just because Canon considered aps-c format was dead without designing lenses for years...

The new 7D which is supposed to come out beginning of september looks like will be a high end aps-c camera.

After seeing the 7D specs, I'm ditching my 450D for it. I was looking at the 1D II /n for sports and event but looks like I'll be getting this new baby.

If the 7D does have an increased MP APS-C sensor then avoid it, the 50D is really limited by the 15MP.

I'm disappointed ... I would like to see some new professional lenses. A new "L" would be great.
Personally, I've been wanting a 24-70 Mark II with IS. But I dont think that will ever happen.

Thats exactly what my friend said who owns every xxD camera. He likes the 50D but said it pushed the limits.

Canon needs these new lenses to compete with Nikon's 16-85mm, 18-105mm, 18-135mm, etc.

Consumer grade SLR's are booming right now. I think Canon would be foolish not to ride the wave. I went hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park and almost every sporto up there had a consumer grade Nikon hanging around their neck. Ashton opened up a new market. I saw another guy with a Canon XSi and kit lens sporting a wide angle adapter w/ a "red ring". I need to find those "L" adapters:rolleyes:. I have been hiking this park for 20 yrs. I used to be the only guy on mountain with an SLR (Nikon F, 50 f2). Now you see them everywhere.
Canon already has a fantastic selection of L glass. Why don't we just engoy it and learn to get the most out of it.

A FF 16-18 MP, fast with a smaller body than the 1D's would be a killer....I could carry 2 bodies on my travels and have 1D AF, speed and image quality. APS-c sucks....my 50D tops out at f8-f10 before defraction kicks in....so it is soley a bird/wildlife body......if canon do something so stupid as APS-c at 18MP.....imagine the D and noise....50D is really pushing it so far.

Canon has good L glass but some of it needs updating (100-400 with 4stop IS anyone?). Canon has some good non L glass but I would rather see it updated ather than EF-S because I went FF a long time ago and only bought a 50D fo the birds. A decent 28-300 non L would be nice as a walkaround/hiking lens...cos I would be carrying a baby too.... :|

Well ... i think its hard to beat the amount of consumer lenses that there are there made by sigma, tokina, tamron, so its kinda strange canon wanting to 'win the battle' against them .... because well ... i canon makes new L there sure won't miss people like us that will buy them, while the consumers ... well, not so many 'sure buyers' ...

As much as we would love to think that canon is catering for us, they cater to whatever market makes them money, as well they should...and right now that market is the budget market...

Wow, pretty elitist attitude in some people here. Canon is also supposedly going to release a new 70-200 f/2.8 with their new IS system as well as a 100mm f/2L macro but G-d forbid they even dare to make anything that's not pro line. The 55-250 and 18-55IS were great editions to the EF-S line of lenses, what' wrong with more good lenses for those who don't have any intention of getting pro lenses. Not everyone can afford L glass and, to be frank, it would be nice to have a zoom lens that started at the 24mm full length(15mm on crop).

The 15-85 (24-135) IS is just about the perfect walkaround for most people....
...tho I'd liked to've seen a 15-70 IS and a bit wider constant aperture, (F4.5?)...still, a definite move up from the 18-55..

Smart move by canon to compete with Nikon and the Sigma , Tamron crowd.
if the 15-85 will have reasonable IQ it will be a winner for them
and for all of you LoLing on L glass the more canon makes profit on consumer the more they can cater for the pros as well

How can you say Canon considered aps-c dead when they introduced 50D, 450D and 1000D last year and 500D this year, and on lenses the 18-200IS was introduced September last year? Doesn't sound dead to me. The consumer-level DSLRs are the best sellers.

What's the point of an 18-135mm when there is already the 18-200? Both have IS and same range of aperture.

but if the IQ of the 18-135 is a little better and it has hybrid IS it might be worth it over the 18-200...

The 18-135 might much cost less than the 18-200, but have similar optics .
OR....
The 18-135 might cost about the same as the 18-200, but have much better optics.
Considering that it uses a 67mm filter, I would it expect the 18-135 to be smaller and cheaper than the 18-200, but have decent optics.

There are orders of magnitude more "soccer moms" and such out there that will drop a couple hundred dollars more for a more capable (translated more convenient range) zoom than there are "pros" willing to upgrade. Be willing to start paying an extra $10000 per L lens and Canon might be swayed by your hard earned money. Otherwise, they will only put enough towards research and development in their pro lines to maintain some bragging rights. In the town where I work (admittedly a small rural town), there is only one 1d series body that I know of, a handful of 5d's, and enough Rebels to pave a short stretch of street with. You can do the math for yourself as to what is making money for Canon.

I was hoping the 7D would be a cheap..er full frame camera. Oh well.
Hopefully 50d and 40d prices will drop tomorrow.

Why couldn't Canon have made a 15-135 f3.5 or f4 constant aperture lens? Or if they HAD to make it a f/3.5-5.6 fine, but make it 15-135.

I'll be ordering this lens just to try it out. I doubt it will have the color and contrast of my L. If it can come close the range and IS might be too much to pass up.

15-135 would be a very wide range, putting a lot of demands on the design. I guess you'd also like it fairly fast and also high IQ. And cheap too? The lens you're describing would be too expensive to be popular.

While I would not buy these lenses due to being EF-s I do think Canon is doint the right thing! there is definitely a market for these, and they look cool! LOL

you must be a pretty big man, heavily invested in Canon Corp. to feel that they should focus more attention on EF lenses just because you have a full frame camera.

Dont believe every rumor you hear. Until you see a story with actual photos like the 2 new consumer grade lenses, then most likely its not true.
