It was late in the date, post 2000, and I found this Heron along the river here. I was shooting with the 500 f4 L IS and the 1.4 TC. The available light just wasn't good enough so I slapped the flash and beamer on. This guy was approx 100 feet away.

Given that this guy was surrounded by fast moving water I thought that I would try and capture some of the water movement a little bit. I stopped down to f20 to get a slower shutter speed which came out at 1/13th sec. The bird is a bit soft but I like the effect.

The problem with the fill flash is that it makes the eyes look so un-natural.

Pics 1 and 2 are particularly good, in my humble opinion.

Good work!

Black-crowned night herons are one of my favorite bird species. There is a Migratory Bird Sanctuary about twelve miles from me that is full of them. The trees are full of nests, so one month ago, I was shooting chicks in the nest. Now the little ones are fledging, so it is a little more challenging, but there must be 75-80 birds within a 100 meter radius.

One thing that I learned, though. If I walk around on the ground directly underneath the nests, I better keep a filter on the lens. Whitewash, you know.
