Of all the lenses I currently own, I cannot for the life of me ever remember saying - gee I wish Canon would update the sharpest lens I own?
Seriously, no one makes a bad Macro, even the 3rd party options are tack sharp wide open. I doubt the IS will be good enough to eliminate the need for a tripod on most 1:1 -- 1:5 type ranges so why again did the engineers at Canon spend all the time making this lens and not say an update to one of the other lenses we all harp about?
If the rumors hold true - it looks like Canon merely updated a bunch of glass to keep pace with Nikon. The 15-85 EFS, 18-135EFS and 100 IS L all appear Canon answers to the 16-85VR DX, 18-135DX and 100 2.8VR Nikkors.
Seems a bit disappointing if you ask me given how many have wanted a 24-70IS or 100-400IS update for some time. Or even a 400/5.6 IS option. Don't get me wrong I love Canon gear, and anything new is better then nothing - glad to see Canon isn't just lying around on it's on laurels; but are these lenses anyone was really begging for?
I'll be up checking the web at 12:01am all week like everyone else, but if nothing else I would expect the remaining 100/2.8 stock to sell out fast because you know this L Macro is going to cost some big time coin. And with L build it's going to need IS to compensate for the weight now :)

Is it just me, or does the lens look weather-sealed?

[...] why again did the engineers at Canon spend all the time making this lens and not say an update to one of the other lenses we all harp about? This new 100mm 2.8 L macro, if true, will probably feature the new Hybrid IS system (http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20090722_hybrid_is.html) Canon announced about a month ago. Quoted from the press release:
Canon's newly developed Hybrid IS technology optimally compensates for angle and shift camera shake. Sudden changes in camera angle can significantly affect images taken during standard shooting, whereas shift-based shaking, which occurs when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene, is more pronounced in macro photography and other close-range shooting. So it makes perfect sense for Canon to launch a new macro lens with the new IS technology. I don't believe this is meant to replace the current 100 macro, as the new one will be an L lens. The current non-L one will most likely remain in the lineup, giving customers a budget option. You are right, though, that the current 100 macro is already very sharp and produces excellent images. Aside from the new IS technology and, obviously, the L build, I am not sure how else Canon is improving the optics inside for the new lens.
not gonna lie, a tad bit ugly :DI think it looks sexy!

a rough translation:
-Dual IS
-UD Glass that gives less chromatic abberation and better color quality
-9 glass pieces (i forget what their called but you should know what im talking about...their moon shaped i believe) that allow for closer focusing and give you beautiful bokeh
-internal automatic focusing with usm moter allowing for fast focusing
-full manual focusing option

Comparing the MTF charts of the 100mm non-L Macro and this new L model, the difference is apparent.

Yeah, when I saw those charts, I was O___O! It won't serve for my purpose at the moment, but I definitely want this lens someday in the future.
