I have seen a lot of discussion on JAlbum but not much on MG2 so thought I would post something.
I have used them all and just came across MG2 the other day; it is PHP based and absolutely amazing to configure, setup, add new photos. It's all made a breeze through the PHP interface.
I highly recommend people try this out if you are looking for a free gallery software that is extremely configurable with downloadable skins or easily modified to you're personal taste.
I have just started configuring my own personal photo gallery online and am using MG2, I encourage others to check out my site if you want to see a working gallery in action with basically a standard skin I downloaded (pbstyle) and modified the colours.

I just downloaded JAlbum the other day and have not had a lot of time to play with it - what is it about MG2 that you like better?

Interesting... I like the face that it doesn't require a database. A lot of people (like me) have cheap hosting that doesn't provide any database support. I have been meaning to upgrade to more space and a DB but maybe not...

Well, maybe I am ahead of myself here because I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I have been using a blog site to post my pictures and they handle all of that stuff - I just choose a template and upload photos. I saw JAlbum in a previous post a few days ago and pulled it down to play with. It easily converted a whole folder of images to an album but I have no idea how to get that on the web. I know no HTML so this looked like an easy way to get started with all this stuff - any recommendations on where to start?

It easily converted a whole folder of images to an album but I have no idea how to get that on the web. JAlbum will do that for you too. If you can't find it in the manual, then ask in their forum.

They're quite different pieces of software. MG2 is an application that runs on a server, and probably uses a mySql database. JAlbum generates html and thumbnails on your PC, and you upload static html to a server. They're for different purposes. There are heaps of alternatives to MG2, like exhibit engine, coppermine, and gallery.

MG2 actually doesn't use a mySQL database at all, it's simply static files.

It still runs on your server though? I guess the main difference then is JAlbum creates a bunch of static files, and MG2 generates things at runtime.

As far as the server goes, JAlbum needs to run on you're web server as well.

Well, I like MG2. I did a test and followed the directions. Without any MySQL DB. Just dropped in the files over FTP (changed some permissions) and started uploading using the web interface. Nice. I even changed the skin.
Check it out, I just uploaded a few pictures from my recent trip to New Zealand http://okuda.ca/gallery

Shortie, I like the skin you picked. The black background isolates the pics nicely. Which skin is it?
I use the "Vertical" skin with the Black.css "Style" for albums to send to friends.

Hi PhotosGuy
I used BluPlusPlus as a start and a black.css and a little bit of editing here and there
If you want the Skin I can Zip the Folder up for you

Shortie, you could always put it on this site for others to use if you wanted.

I used SnipeGallery (see www.snipegallery.com), also free and mysql/php based. Customised it (see www.marcderidder.com) although I've still got to dot the i's and cross the t's.
