According to the G3 manual, if you turn the camera on and the lenscap is on, a LENS message will appear in the display and it wont turn on.

However, when I turn the camera on and the lens cap is on, it starts normally, the lens extends, and pops the lens cap off.

Is this normal?

Can't say if it's normal or not... but my experience has been the same. Maybe if there's enough resistance and the cap won't come off then we'll see the error. Can't be good for the lens though!

Thanks Widthom.

I just tried another G3, and same result.

Is there a setting somewhere to get it to give the LENS warning?

Here is what I received from Canon Tech Support:

"Thank you for your E-mail regarding your camera.

This is normal. If the lens cap does not pop off "LENS" may appear in the
LCD.

Please note there are no known issues with the PowerShot G3. In the event
a hardware issue arises Canon Canada Inc. supplies a manufacturer's
warranty for one (1) year from the date of purchase against manufacturing
defects. Any extended warranty purchased is not honoured or offered
through Canon.

Should you require further assistance, please feel free to email us or
visit our customer support website at http://www.canon.ca"

In real usage, sometimes the lens cap pops off, sometimes it doesn't - quite a lot of the time, it pops off the housing but catches on the lens so you still have to flip it off... still a lot friendlier than the G2's constant 'LENS' if you're not quick getting the cap off... it's immaterial once you fit an LADC58 or Lensmate though...

Cheers,

I did get the LENS message when i was having problems with accidentally turning on the camera when putting it into my camera bag as the lens was unable to extend. There were no nasty noises of grating motors or anything. Nb. the camera was turning on accidentally as the on switch was slightly bust, for which reason i exchanged the camera.
