Well, it appears I am finally part of the club (and already to the L club too! :)), and back to "real" photography, after a break with the PowerShot G2.

The 17-40 surprised me, as it is lighter than what I expected, as the 85 also surprised me for being heavier. That baby sure packs lots of glass! I'm in wonder!

The jump in terms of usage is trivial (so it seams, kudos to Canon), and the steepest learning curve seems to rest with the Speedlite.

I've been mostly a lurker around here, because I felt somewhat limited, particularly for being used to the full manual Pentax MX. But now excuses are over!

Swallow,

I am happy with you :D
You got a nice setup ... now put it to the best possible usage.

Out of curiosity - did you go the B+H route?

Best regards,
Andy

Nice set-up. You'll like the 85mm a lot.

I assume from your name that you are a Monty Python fan?

Hoho! I never noticed that!

"What is the air speed of a swallow?"
"What? African or European?"
"Well, I don't know that...Arggghhhh"

Nice set up you have there. Woudn't mind some gear like that but oh well, just need to work F/T over summer.

Almost... ;)

Calumet was the only one open on Saturdays, so Calumet it was! Both the lenses and the Speedlite were bought there. The rest, including the 85 mm hood that was out of stock, were bought at http://computeruniverse.net . The bag was bought at the local FNAC.

Everything went smoothly. The only problem was with the Speedlite, that has a broken wide panel :(. I'm checking with Calumet to see if it is worth sending it for replacement or having it repaired localy at cost. I don't believe it will be much expensive. I checked with the local Canon technical assistance, and look and behold, since it's a recent model they don't even have it's technical manual yet, so they cannot order the part since they can't find it's code  .

Some bad luck, but anyway it seems to have been worth it. Preliminary testing on the lens seem to indicate good copies.

Good choice on lenses. 90% of my photos are taken with my 17-40 or 85, they do wonders. Please be sure to show us your results.

Thanks. It was a tough choice overall, but since my interests go mainly on architecture/landscape and portrait/candids, after all it was not so tough! The forum was a great help on the choice and I really have to thank you guys (and girls!). After I establish myself with this kit, perhaps I will enhance it with a 70-200 f/4, but I will be giving it some time...
