Here is a 100% crop comparison of the 28-135 zoom (at 28mm) with the 24mm F1.4L. Aperatures were matched, side by side comparison with 350 pixel crops. 20D Camera was tripod mounted, mirror lock-up used, self-timer. In-camera sharpness set to minimum, all other settings middle. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, but then you might be surprised...

You know something... just because I do home theater as well, I am always looking for shadow detail. While the L has more contrast... those contrast areas have completely lost all the detail. Looking at the area just left of the roof - in the shadows of the trees - the non-l lense still shows detail. With the L - it is just a solid black area. I like the color reproduction of the "l" better - but the crushed blacks could be an issue for me... then again had I not seen pictures next to each other... probably wouldn't have noticed it.

What surprises me is that the 24/1.4 looks sharpest to me at f/5.6 and f/8 ... maybe some kind of focus issue?
To me, every picture on the right (L) looks better than every picture on the left ... but that's no big surprise to me.
Best regards,
Andy

I have been looking at the 28-135 the last couple weeks.....replacing my 28-105 with a better lens
Interesting comparison

Medic,
as you have the 70-200/4 ... why not also look at the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI?
It might not have the 'Canon' label, but is quite superior on all other counts (except reach and IS).
Best regards,
Andy

The crops above were image-center, these are near edge image crops, which are a little more telling. As info, for the tests, camera was autofocused once, then switched to manual focus for the series to assure the focus didn't change between images.
