Not some of my best stuff but very cool nonetheless !

I'd like to try some stuff with bringing out the Alien Bee's to light up the scene, along with a filter or two just to see what would happen. Definitely use the CPL on the water, I can't wait to see some clarity in the stores

This was taken down by the river on 8-12-09. I was hunting for perseides but I couldn't get any on cam :( Just kept on missing them as they streaked by a place where my camera/lens wasn't pointing.

I used a small flashlight to lightpaint the scene, here, in an attempt to see more of the stones underneath.

Wasn't very successful but it made a cool contrast to the blue greens, above.

In the distance you can see the lightening of the clouds - that's a thunderstorm that was going on. From time to time I would hear a big CRACK after seeing a persied meteor. I started thinking they had become meteorites and landed nearby! Fortunately I realized on the horizon about 20kms away there was a thundercloud...and notilucent clouds, underneath it. So I had perseids meteors, notilucent clouds, auroras and thunderstorms all at once.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3548/3875847330_bf19149572_o.jpgI kept on moving from one position in the sky to the next, and everytime I did I would miss just by a hair of a mm the Perseid meteor! Again and again, about 6 times this happened...ah well, got some auroras battling the clouds, at least.

Beautiful shots Karl ! In that first shot it looks like the Northern Lights under the aurora at the horizon above the thunderstorm clouds . Are they ?

I agree with what others have said: very beautiful.

Karl, I notice that all the shots are @16mm. What lens were you using?

What's the difference between the Northern Lights and an aurora? I thought they were the same? :(

Cheers,
11-16 2.8 tokina on the 5D mark II.

Cut out the corners and you have a pretty damn good image :) it's sharp considering.. but flare is a bit of a problem and vingeting with a 77mm GNB singh ray filter (not seen in this shot).

I am prepped and ready to buy the carl zeiss 21 2.8 ZE when it hits the market :) I'm counting down the days...I think I'm the biggest fan of this lens' performance, right now, and I cannot waiiiit to see what I can do with it ...all my shots were done with the 11-16 tokina, on both 50D and 5D mark II, for reference.

I specifically marvel at the corner sharpeness and the lack of fringing..that's a particular problem for me with the Tokina (that and CA when shooting in daylight).
Great set Karl. Can't wait to see more of your camera art, winter's-a comin'. :)
And I can't wait :D for once for winter!!

They are, yup. Northern lights, Aurora, Aurora Borealis, North Lights, Ice Lights, and Lights of the North are all synonymous (I've had a dutch couple refer to them as "Ice Lights" which I thought was cool..I wonder what other cultures call them)
Yeah, me too.

Great shots as always Karl. I find your photos always quite calming.

That's my goal! :D

They are basically the same . When i mentioned Northern lights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora_(astronomy)) i didn't really explain myself but to me Northern lights are the straightup beams you see in alot of aurora images . Auroras can be seen farther south many times but the straightup beams don't seem to appear in images i have seen below the Canadian border .

So what do you think the Zeiss lens (http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A8003B58B9/Contents-Frame/47DEE3114EC54FA2C12574BF0034C8C1) price will run ?? I saw where it will estimate 1399 euro but how much is that American $$ .
