And f/4 isn't exactly a fast lens. I have the 24-105 f/4 and it does a good job with IS most of the time. When I need more light I either use the flash or break out the 50/1.4. What are you shooting and under what conditions? The widest 2.8 you can get would be a 14mm. But it's not remotely close to replacing a 70-200 so it seems like an odd question to ask.

i dont need anything to replace the 70-200. i bought it with high expectations and i was disappointed. i cant afford the 2.8 IS.
Ive also realized that i need width over telephoto.
i've been reading around and the sigma 30 f1.4 seems pretty good

Depends on the sensor size.
Widest and fastest for a full frame would be a 14mm f2.8 or a 15mm f2.8 fisheye.
For a cropped sensor, probably the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 or a Sigma 4.5mm f2.8 or a 10mm f2.8 fisheye.

That's a great lens, but not wide at all. It's pretty much "normal" on crop bodies.
If you need wider, your best bet is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.
If you need wide and faster than f/2.8, you'll need a full-frame body and either the 24/1.4 or 35/1.4.

get the 24L (first version). i think i've seen then floating around for $800-900. it might take a couple more months of saving (i'm in your age bracket.. working and paying for school are tough, i know) but i think it'll be worth it if you want to go wide and fast. i think $200-300 is manageable to scrap together if you keep at it. good luck!

The 70-200 lens you have is a great lens. Your expectations may be a little misaligned. Being that it's an f/4 lens means that it's better suited for outdoor shooting where there is plenty of light. For the money you can't get a better 70-200.
Now that 30mm f/1.4 is a dandy of lens for indoor shooting (i.e. low light). It'll take some getting used to since it's a prime and it's DOF is super shallow. For the money it too is hard to beat.

i found myself always being outside in the evening, and it just wasnt working out. so i've been using my 50mm the whole time.
i have no problems using a prime. just wanted something wider than 50mm for when im indoors and wanna take pictures of friends and family

might even want to consider a wide zoom and a flash.

My 17-55 EFs is f2.8 and 17 is pretty wide. You can get wider and faster with other lenses depending on what you value
- Versatility? Any zoom that does f2.8; my 17-55mm is a good example
- As wide as possible? Maybe the 10-22mm
- As fast as possible? Primes
I myself am somewhat dissapointed in f2.8. I imagined it would be better in low light but I still need to boost the ISO quite high. I will definitely be getting a prime once I am sure of the best focal length to get.
I am quite happy with 17mm but I will consider getting the 10-22mm someday if the budget allows.

Wow! You certainly picked the wrong lens if you need/want a wide and fast glass.
The 70-200mm f/4L IS lens can be used in considerably lower light levels than the 70-200mm f/4L (non-IS) model. However, this lens is quite expensive and in no way could it be considered "wide"!.
The 17-50mm f/2.8 Tamron should certainly be one of the lenses that you consider for a fast (f/2.8 is as fast as you will see in any zoom) mid-range zoom.
The prime 30mm f/1.4 Sigma is a fast lens but, not very wide on a 1.6x camera.
The 11-16mm Tokina f/2.8 is a GREAT UWA zoom lens and as fast as any zoom but, its limited zoom range keeps it as more of an axillary lens than a primary glass.

Like they said, the 30mm 1.4 isn't exactly wide, but I love mine a lot.

Have you looked into the Sigma 20mm f1.8 yet? It is as wide and fast as you can get for a reasonable amount of money.

what i was looking for is a good comprimise between fast and wide... a i think the 30mm f1.4 will be just fine.
i have a 17-85 f4. if i ever need it

30 * 1.6 = 48
if you think 50mm will suit your needs, that's great.. but that sort of defeats the purpose of asking for something wide and fast to begin with. if it's really that relative, why not the sigma 50 1.4? it'd be around 85mm on a crop, but it's a far superior lens than the 30mm and it's around the same price as the lens you just sold.
