Nice! Does this mean "real" weather sealing? "A magnesium alloy body offers environmental protection – the tough, lightweight construction is designed to defend against moisture, and dust – equivalent to the legendary EOS–1N." If so, this camera is on my want list. The only thing that scares me a little bit is the 18MP...

That is my hope as well. I would be firing away with the 10mp and only use 18mp assuming I would be doing some large cropping.

+1. My 40D resolution with the better focusing system = win!
I'm curious to see how the low light performance turns out. I'm not entirely convinced on the whole "micro-lens" solution to improving high ISO performance in pixel packed sensor's. We'll just have to wait and see...

I hope Gizmodo got the 15-85mm's price wrong... because U$D 800 for that lens sounds TOO MUCH! You could get a 17-40mm f/4L for less money... or spend a couple of Franklins more and get an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS!

Unknown on noise but I would assume it would be better. I am sure the first real reviews will note 18mp ISO 12800 vs 10mp mRaw ISO 12800 so we can see :)

anyone using APS-C should be pretty excited...it's a flagship APS-C camera. Canon is obviously commited to the format, since the 7D is sealed and feature-laden, and it's possible that EF-S lenses will eventually gain sealing as well.
Now we see if Canon sticks with APS-H or just simplifies and commits to a second line in 35mm format.

can someone summarise their thoughts on the metering/AF aspects of this? I remember the 5DII being a disappointment (to some), but is this a step forward? Will it be better suited for tracking objects like birds in flight, perhaps using the colour metering to help keep tracking on target?
Does it look like its similar to any of the other Canon range AF modules?

Seconded! I am a bit apprehensive that the new sensor will be too many MP for this format. I'm hoping that the reviews prove me wrong, though.

Definitely an upgrade. AF gains 10 points - and all are cross type - from the xxD series; metering gains 20 zones (IIRC) and seems to be an upgraded metering system as well (from the Matrix Metering or whatever Canon was calling it).

Yes, it's pretty well been said that the 7D shines at ISO < 1600. For an outdoor sports/wildlife camera, I'll take it!
If you want to shoot indoor weddings, it's not for you anyway.
Now, show the same comparisons for the lower ISOs.
I'll wait to see the full reviews of the non-beta cameras. The beta is beautiful for it's purpose thus far.

Did you have a look at the images without in-camera noise reduction? They are far, far more impressive. Turn off the NR, and run your own. Problem solved!

I'm not seeing the comparisons you guys are posting. I compared the 7D to the 1D III (both wildlife/sports cameras) as well as the 7D to the 50D (two different shooting-type emphasis cameras, IMHO). I do see the color difference between the 7 and the 50, the color different isn't there between the 7 and the 1, though. But (and?), if you scroll down, the 7 is much sharper than the 50 (look at the edge of the crayon box).

I would, based on your statement "hockey pics" The 7D should be a wonderful sport/wildlife camera, many like the 1.6 "in camera crop" for that sort of thing. But, you'd be hedging your bets on an unknown factor right now. I'm waiting for a review to tell me that Canon has done what they claim to vis-a-vis noise reduction.
The 5D seems to win in the high ISO department, too - so indoor hockey maybe the 5D.
Also there is one pre-review that indicates that tracking a moving target using multi-focus points is problematic - is that important for your hockey pics?

What's the point of Canon coming out with the new EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens when they already have the EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens? There doesn't seem to be much difference in these two lenses other than the obvious.
Is the expectation that the new 18-135 IS lens will come down in price and become a kit lens for 1.6x crop cameras (replacing the 28-135 IS lens)?

I'm not saying I don't like the new EF-S lenses or that I'd buy any of them. Just wondering what Canon is thinking by bringing out a new lens that on the surface is nearly identical to an existing lens but has 65mm less focal length range and isn't much cheaper. Are the potential 18-200mm lens buyers really more interested in an 18-135mm lens that is $100 cheaper?
But your comment brings up another question, is the new EF-S 15-85mm lens going to replace the existing EF-S 17-85mm IS lens? Seems like alot of similarity there too.

Are the potential 18-200mm lens buyers really more interested in an 18-135mm lens that is $100 cheaper? As a general rule, the smaller the zoom factor the better the image quality. There are many people who choose the 24-70L over the less expensive 24-105L because the 24-70 has less distortion on the wide end and many samples of the 24-105 get a little soft on the long end.

I understand that, but you're comparing an f/2.8 non-IS lens to an f/4 IS lens, so there's much more difference in those two lenses.
I guess we'll have to wait and see what the new EF-S lenses IQ is like, but I don't see any reason to get too excited about either of them.

Its a brilliant camera, throughly revised but 18 mp is the only thing thats keeping me away. I tried it first hand at Canon Lounge here and wasnt too impressed with the IQ at high ISO.
The same cam at 12 MP or there abouts would have been just perfect. I dont know why Canon is cramming in more pixels with every new release. I would want to meet the product planners at Canon because they seem to be going P&S way with the megapixel highlight.

I am a bit confused though--are they going to be merging the xxD line making the 7D? I ask because of the crop sensor on the 7D which makes me want to pick up a 5D still... :(No, the 7D is not replacing the xxD line. It's a new line of its own, like the original 5D was a few years ago. There will be a 60D in the near future.
You may want to read through these threads for further details:
7D is not replacing any camera - New Line (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=746699)
7d means the end of the xxD series? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=745372)
60D will have an 18MP sensor! (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=760576)And don't let the 1.6x crop factor turn you away from the 7D. It's an excellent camera. More than just deciding between Full Frame and crop, take a look at the other features on each camera and determine which feature-set best suits your needs. By the way, when you say 5D, do you mean the original 5D, or the 5D MkII?
