View Full Version : Why won't my camera split up clips?

I'm using a Canon ZR960 Mini-DV video camera. Whenever I try and import video into iMovie or Final Cut Pro, it imports the video as one large file, instead of breaking each individual clip like it used to.

For example, I could film a shot of my face, STOP FILMING, then film a separate shot of the floor. Then, upon import, instead of having one clip of my face, and one clip of the floor, it would be one continuous clip.

This is very frustrating to somebody like me who wants to edit separate clips. Please help!

Specs:
Canon ZR960
12" Powerbook G4
iMovie HD 6
Final Cut Pro 5
Mac OS X 10.4.11

I would check the setting, maybe. The vegas I use automatically does that as default, I don't even rememeber if there were any setting for that at all.

iMovie says it's set to split the clips up. So I think my camera's at fault.

This is all I have in my prefrences for iMovie-

The reason I'm thinking it's the camera's fault is because I'm having the same problem in iMovie AND in Final Cut. My old camera never had this problem, and until recently, neither did this new one. I never changed any settings to my knowledge.

If your camera's date and time are set, your iMovie/Final Cut can recognize the date stamp and will create a new clip every time there is a jump in time (i.e. if one frame is recorded at 12:00, and the next at 12:02, it will recognize the difference in time and start a new clip at 12:02).

Unfortunately, if the date and time are not set on your camera, the software will not be able to detect when clips start and end.

Perhaps this is the cause of your problems. Is your date and time set correctly? Perhaps someone else got a hold of the camera and accidentally reset all of the in-camera settings?

play with your timecode settings, when the camera records, it should be giving a new numerical to each take within the timecode, if it isnt doing thing, and there are no timecode breaks, the device/computer may be seeing the tape as one continuous clip..
