I'm a wedding photographer (hence the 85L as the longest lens used here) who's usually surfing when there's waves here. I didn't have time to surf Sunday, so I shot a few photos. First time shooting surfing.

Stunning.
Too often people more into photography than sport will complain about this or that, the foreground, the flat light, whatever. But as someone who used to surf and still reads about it, I say - great barrels, great air, great pulled-back views. Stunning.

I like them all, but #3 is the heat. Nice shot.

the 85L is a great lens for shooting from the water (pulled back on the shoulder).
great job of making the best of it from land!
not sure if this was intended, but the whitewater in #1 & #2 seem a bit pink'ish/amber'ish?
and,...wish we had glassy barrels like those right now...

I remember when we had a big swell here in San Diego the only "long" lens that I had was the 28-128mm and was a little disappointed because it didn't have the reach I was looking for. When I PP my pictures there were some really fun ones because I wasn't pulled in all the way and the ability to get the entire wave on the frame was stunning.
I was stoked to see these shot with an 85L and even though the water is 70 degrees here would gladly trade it for cooler water/wetsuit and some fun glassy shoulders/tubes.
My vote is for #2.

Is it just my eyes at 46 yrs old or do they lean towards the OOF side?
I ask because the 85L is my next lens purchase. Courious about settings.
Thanks for sharing.

I think it's your eyes :) or the resizing. Everything was shot at 1.2 (not sure about SS right now). I like the 85L a lot for wedding work, it does hunt in low light though. As for not having a longer lens, I didn't mind at all with these shots, I tend to use a lot of negative space in my photos anyway.
Thanks

I like em,
very good use. A bit odd using the 1.2 wide open I must say.
the 85L is a great lens for shooting from the water (pulled back on the shoulder).
I am glad you think so because I have never heard that before...
I am just getting set up to use the 85mm 1.8 in water,

I am just getting set up to use the 85mm 1.8 in water,
seems as if the ol' 15mm fisheye inside the barrel shots have become all too common. i'm seeing more and more, respected surf photographers getting creative with longer focals in the water. nonetheless, the 85L is niiiiiiiice

If I didn't have time to surf but saw waves coming in like that, I'd make time real quick. I think they look cool pulled back like that. Color cast does look a little amber-ish in the first two.
