I love my 5D and bg-e6 but from one side it looks mighty ugly!
Any ideas on how to combat the uglyness and make it look less stuck on?
The Lplate goes some of the way to making it look like 'one piece' but its not too practical!

Ditto... unless you're a gearbator, it really shouldn't matter. If aesthetics are that big of a deal, get a 1d series with an integrated grip.

The camera is merely a tool to capture your work. If it works to your expectations, who cares how it looks? *

* Granted I wouldn't shoot a wedding with a toilet paper flash diffuser

Time at the Fat Farm ?!

Camouflage paint?

Some shiny chrome 'bling'?

Leave it at home? (and carry a second battery in your pocket)

Just shoot in portrait all of the time, and that ugly part will be pointing down and be sort of hidden.

why is it dumb? if it bothers the OP than it is not dumb. i for one agree with the OP that the canon grips looks like crap (and don't fit that well either) and i would love to see a more integrated solutions in the future.

It's dumb because he's asking how to make the existing grip less ugly. Have any ideas?

Tell Canon you dislike the design of their grips and that you want a more streamlined feel for the next revision? Wow, that was hard to communicate now wasn't it?

You can't change what's already there but you can voice your opinion for future fixes.

You must spend more time on the side of the camera to notice this ...

Here's Canon's contact info » http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ContactCanonAct

As NYPhotog inferred, OP wanted a solution suggestion, not merely make a gripe to Canon about a butt ugly product

Take it to a good body shop, they can do wonders with fiberglass and some touch up paint. :)

Seriously though, the L plate hides it to the extent most would never know it wasn't part of the original camera. Impractical? An L plate? I've forgotten what the camera looks like without it, and it's almost a must have item when using a monopod or tripod, something that is another almost essential item.

Only $4000 more dollars and Canon takes Ralffs suggestion and merges the two, calls it a 1 series.

The only option I can think of is not use the grip.. It's not like you are going to be able to have something manufactured.

There are no options.........OH maybe you can trade for my 40D gripped. She is a cutie;)

Instead of looking at your camera, try looking through the view finder. That'll keep your mind of how nice ( or ugly ) your camera looks.

I agree that any of the grips for the XXD bodies are ugly. The grips for the Nikon D300 and D700 look much better.

Rey, are you asking how it affects the OP's IQ? I don't know for sure, it might drop it some... :p

I guess it would affect the image quality a bit, since he's looking at the side of the camera and not at the viewfinder... but it's just semantics!

I think sandpaper and spray paint... that's my suggestion. Maybe you can add some racing stripes to help take your eye away from the shoddy build?

;)

I think Canon does this on purpose with their "add-on" grips. They figure if a person wants a "NICE" looking grip, they should buy a 1D or 1Ds body, and have it integrated, so it looks nice. If they don't want to shell out the bucks for a 1D, or 1Ds series body, then they're stuck with the "ugly" looking attach on grips. JMHO

I agree that it looks terrible. You should send it to me and I'll work on a fix for you. It might take me a few years tho.:D

I guess, but they had a nice, seamless grip for the old EOS 3.

Some people are about aesthetics. What's wrong with that? The grips for these bodies suck. And sometimes you may get a bad one and has some play even when properly tightened. The grip on my 1Ds MK III doesn't move and it doesn't affect IQ. So, I'll never have to worry about it. Capiche? :)

I agree the grip looks butt ugly. Simply as that.
But for me, the reason not to buy one is the feel actually.. I'd love to have thesame feel as my 50D gives me on the grip. If it already had that, I'd really consider getting myself one.
