View Full Version : Storing lenses with hoods on

I just got myself a LowePro rolling mini trekker aw, seems like a nice enough bag, though i'm wondering how if it's going to be big enough to hold my 1D Mk 3 and 20D next year ;)
I've put the hoods on the lenses, some of them lay lens side down in the bag, some of them lay hood down. This means when the bag's lying long ways down, which is how it'd usually be, there's some weight and therefore force on the lens hood and the mount between the hood and the lens, especially for the 70-200 IS. Is this likely to damage the hood or lens, or loosen it at all?

I've always wondered about that too. What I do sometimes is use one of the extra dividers under the lens to take away some of the weight off the hood.

What puzzles me is the amount of dividers bag manufacturers give with their bags. They give you something like 20 while people may only use 6 or 7 of them.

Yeah, but I bet they're cheap to make. I have 5 lying on my floor upstairs, and a few more downstairs from my old bag I think.
Has anyone ever had or heard of damage storing lenses with the hoods on in this way?

I reverse my hoods on the lenses for storage/carrying in the bag...takes up less space and takes weight off plastic hood.

I do the same, but when on a more serious shoot, I bring the largest bag with all the lenses vertical/upside with the hood mounted properly.

You mean the hoods are mounted just like you shoot, but pointing towards the back of the lens (which is what I was trying to describe), or the lenses just kinda roll around inside the hood?

You mean to mount it in reverse? I think this is what Tim and myself are trying to account for.

Hi xuxu1,
Do you mean mounted on the lens or unmounted.
Thanks

The hoods on all my Canon lenses can be reversed (so the lens is nested inside the hood). You just twist the hood to remove it, reverse the hood and twist to lock it on the lens. It keeps the hood from chafing on the lens when stored this way.

With smaller lenses, how do you store them? Which end up?
I store them with the hood reversed, with the Lens Cap/ Hood Up.
For for my 70-200 IS, In the protective bag, with hood on, with extra padding.

I can't stand futzing with hoods and would not have enough room in the bag if I tired to store them in the bag.. reveresed on the lens or alone.
I take all the hoods I need and nest them together... then I simply thread my bags strap through the center.
No hoods in my bag,.. ever.

I have the 16-35 f2.8L, 24-70 f2.8L, and 70-200 f2.8L IS. I keep the hoods on all but the 70-200 mounted "ready-to-use". The 70-200 wears its hood reversed when it is in my bag (because the total length is way beyond my bag depth). The bag I use is a Lowepro Stealth 650 which stores all these lenses (any one of the three with the body attached) in a vertical position. The whole package is heavy, to be sure, but it surely is convenient to use. Nothing to move out of the way to get at any of the lenses. There are other spaces in the bag for my flash unit and other accessories too.

When you have the hoods on, it makes getting the lens cap off a little fiddly though.
I have no problem getting the lenses in my Lowepro Stealth Reporter 500, but finding a home for the lens hoods that is not going to trash them is less easy - especially the one for the 17-40, which is quite wide.
Maybe a need another bag for the hoods!

You can always take off the cap first, then mount the hood. That's what I do.
And I know what you mean by the 17-40 hood, it's just too wide!
