I'm a newbie here. Have a question about flash. I have a canon rebel xt (I'm so ready to upgrade) anyway, I have the canon 430 EX flash. Because its a slave, Am I only able to use it on camera and/or can I use one of those transmitters to use it off camera or do I need to buy the 580 EX (master)? Thanks for your help all.

Your choices are:

On camera.

Off camera triggered by a ST-E2 or 580EX on camera

By one of the many triggers out there for off camera use.

Wireless is great, but if you're doing it on the cheap, go wired for now.

The cheapest solution is use a 15' pc cord and a hotshoe adapter to get the flash off-camera, albeit in manual mode.
(you'll also need a hotshoe adapter on the camera end since the XT doesn't have a pc terminal)

Depends on what functions you want to retain. If you want to retain full ettl function on your flash away from your camera wirelessly you would need a 580ex, 580exII, , 550ex, or ST E2 flash controller. You can also move your flash away from your camera and still retain all the auto controls with a long OCF or hotshoe cable like this. http://flashzebra.com/products/0125/index.shtml

If you dont mind the using your flash in manual mode then you can just pick up a set of the cheap wireless triggers. The cactus v4's from gadget infinity work nicely. Remember that these only send a sync signal and dont communicate any other information between camera and flash.
