I am about to purchase the "nifty fifty" and I was wondering what y'all thought about the lens hood for it. Let me know if you purchased it as well or if you thought it was a waste. Thanks - Art

I have one and bought it separately from the lens. I figure why would Canon design and sell a hood when it has no impact on performance and so have hood for all my lenses and use them at all times. I bough it cheap on ebay, imported new!

Always use a lens hood. I just wish Canon would supply the lenses with them. Furthermore, I wish they would supply lens hoods for their standard lenses for use on reduced-format cameras like my 10D.

For the 50/1.8 I got a rubber hood from B&H used for $5. Works fine. Yes, have a hood for every lens you own!

I bought a spacer ring and use a slighty larger metal hood for my 50. Makes it look like an important lens.

One of my pet peves! Why does canon NOT include lens hoods with their flipping lenses? What a freaking nightmare. I have been waiting months for a hood for my 50 1.4 and dont think they have manufactured any for my 10-22. ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!! Must go punch something!

The EW-83E works with the 10-22, it is originally supplied with the 17-40 and 16-35 and an option for the 10-22.
BUT
It is SO HUGE, that I hardly use it.

The EW 83DII hood originally designed for the EF 24 f/1.4L will work on the 17-40L, it is narrower than the standard hood and can actually fit in my bag on the lens!
Since this works on the 17-40 and does not show in the picture with the narrower field of view, it might work on the 10-22.
Just a thought.

They do provide you with the hood on some lens, atleast their higher end ones.
And yes, its good to have the hood if not to help from glaring from the sun, just to protect your lens if you drop it, it might just brace the fall enough to protect your expensive investment.

The lens on the 50mm F1.8 is quite deeply recessed, of the lenses I have that's the one i'd not worry so much about. The hood comes as an adaptor ring which almost acts like a hood itself, and the hood's tiny. I never bothered to use it unless there was a lot of light coming from the side. I use the hood on the 50mm F1.4 all the time, because of the placing of the element it seems more prone to lens flair.

I couldn't have said it better, except that my lens has no flair at all: I can smell interesting subjects far better than it can. ;)
