:D I just received a tip that they put me (or will be putting me) in the magazine of New Scientist ..I'm on their website right now located here:

Cool eh :D I haven't received any word from the NMM about the winners, yet, but I'm crossing my fingers.

Anyone else from here in the competition or on that gallery? I recognize some shots that I've seen before from somewhere.

Excellent stuff Karl, your photos are absolutely fantastic and worthy for New Scientist magazine.

Good luck with the competition, hope the news is good news!

Fantastic....only 1 week till the winners are announced to the public...will you take a trip over to the Royal Observatory to see the exhibition itself if you win? Or is that part of the prize anyhow??

Unfortunately they don't cover it :( though if I were to win first prize which is about 2500$ (CAN) then I could afford a visit over. If I don't win though, I've arranged to send a friend over to see and photo it..she was going to europe anyway for a couple of months :D lol!

Thanks :D Even if I don't win, it's nice to be exhibited there..I can still say that, at least. To be recognized by judges of that caliber, that's reward enough for me..though if I did win a bit of cash, hey I'm not complaining about that either :D I could use one of those EQ tracking mounts to explore the stars this winter!

Honestly the competition and reading about it, viewing the other images has made me want to pursue learning more about the universe we live in, view more and see with my own eyes..explore the universe with photography. I was amazed about hearing this story about how the hubble scope discovered over 300 million galaxies in the space of one small blip of blackness

Yeah, I saw that YouTube video the other day. Incredible that an apparently black area of sky, where nothing was ever seen before, yielded so much in the way of galaxies.

I read something the other day that contrary to popular belief, not everything in the universe is moving away from us. It was believed that everything was expanding, like an inflating balloon, but scientists have apparently noticed billions of distant galaxies, across billions of light years, all moving towards the same distant point. They call it the "Dark Flow" or something. I'll try and find the link.

As for tracking mounts, get yourself an EQ5 or something, as they're cheap and great for mounting your camera on. If you weren't so far away I'd sell you mine! ;)
