I'm considering the G11, but wondered what flash I should be looking into. Is the Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash a good choice, or will it only work with the EOS line?

Any of the Canon flashes will work. Some of the flash capability is limited by the camera itself, but you still get the big features like E-TTL, some zoom, etc. With the G10, the flash can be controlled through the LCD screen on the camera.

All that said, the G10 looks kind of ridiculous with the 580 mounted to it (I know because I've done it and saw what it looked like!). A smaller flash is probably a better choice if you want to stay compact, light, and mobile. You may want to consider the new Canon 270EX or the 220EX. Others here have used the Sunpak R2000 with good results too.

its will work, its great flash but might look a bit large on the cam.

haha the 580 is twice the size of a g10. that's gonna look crazy. i agree, i seen a lot of people using the sunpak rd2000 or the 270ex. i have a rd2000 and its nice and compact. my friend has a 270ex and it was much smaller than i thought it was gonna be.

the 430ex is a little smaller but works great with the g9

From reading the summaries and skimming the manual, I believe that the 580EX II flash will work on the G11 in the same sense that it 'works' on the G9/10.

The 270EX is a much better match. If you think this looks big, compare it to the 580EX in the link below.

Here's a pic (from Google search) that shows the 580EX on a G9 (or should I say a G9 on a 580EX?).

i wonder if the sd card is there to keep the 580ex from tipping over. haha

I use my off camera flash cord to use my 580 with the G10. Just handhold the speedlight.

Too funny. Thanks for showing me this. I had been thinking about getting as much flash as I can so that if I get an eos later, I will be ready. If I can use it off the camera, then it won't look so darn silly. Otherwise, I'll look into the 270ex.

I seem to remember a nintendo 64 james bond game or similar - you can play in big head mode. that's what a 580ex on a g series looks like.

You guy are waaaay too concerned with how it looks. The 580EX provides power and full bounce, the 220 doesn't, and the 270 provides limited bounce. Plus, the little eye light catch flip thing is very useful for portraits.

ScottKCooper

Cadenza, would you use the 580ex with an off camera flash cord, or right on top of the camera?

pivot and swivel is important than appearance. 580ex or 580exii are excellent choices, but maybe too much flash for such a camera... I might go with the 430 instead. in my opinion, the 270ex is too limited.

Back when I got my G3, the first add-on I bought was a 550ex. It was basically glued onto the shoe, I liked it so much. I tried a friend's 220ex, and it wasn't even close. The 220ex was lighter, but I figured that if I needed an external flash, I NEEDED it to be at it's best.

I also found red-eye to be much less of an issue with a flash further from the lens.

It's really not hard to handle, you just need to get used to setting the camera down differently (on it's back, on something soft). I also took to carrying the camera by the flash, which seemed easier.

I've used a cord and bracket with the G3 (meh), but more often used bounce and/or Stofen diffuser. Slave flash with wireless TTL is cool too.

You asked the question, so I know you want to go big. You won't regret it.

Just getting into photography and bought this flash.
On auto it is always very much over exposed so I suppose it will always have to be used in the manual modes.

Switched them both off quickly just before the photo was taken as there was a loud buzzing noise coming from the camera.

Cheers.

I use it on top of the camera, since I don't have a cord. On my list of things to get, though.

If the G is your primary camera I can see using the 580EX. It takes great shots with good light. The 270EX is definitely limited. It is right in the middle of the onboard flash and the 580EX performance-wise.

I used the 430EX with my G7 for a few months and the results were great. However I found that it resulted in poor balance.

Any idea release date of the G11?

Haven't heard - still available for pre-order unlike the eos d7. I am just getting into photography, and of course, want to get all the best, with a disposable camera budget, but the g11 seems like something I could buy, and get a lot of use out of while I decide whether I have the skills and interest in 5dII, or its replacement in the future. That is sort of what was driving the "get the best flash I can afford now" question of this thread. Honestly, the g11 seems to be plenty of camera for now. I'm thinking of staging / shooting real estate, family outings, of course, perhaps portraits, and then some day weddings. I've watched some other folks grow into that, and never took the first step myself. Sorry, rambling.

Sounds good, and you know what you want.
I am considering the G11 as well.

Search up Canon wirless radio flash trigger or something of that sort on ebay. You'll find plenty of cheap radio triggers for off camera flash. You lose TTL metering, so the flash's power is set manually.

You guy are waaaay too concerned with how it looks.

My wife has a pink camera case. Her SX200IS has a pink leather strap from Coach. She also has a pink cover on her iPhone and her Kindle. My niece insisted on getting a pink camera.

Looks are important, especially to the females. Ever go car shopping with a girl or buy a car for your wife? The most important consideration is the color. And no, my wife's car is not pink -- even she drew the line there. It's a sapphire black Volvo. My Lincoln is light blue. So there.

Hahaha. I just stumbled onto this thread.

I've done the same thing - great big flash, PowerShot G10. Then I add a crazy looking flash diffuser to it as well just to complete the ensemble.

It works great! It looks completely ridiculous. I might have to get one of those off-camera cables.

Who cares - plus if you add a dslr later, this flash will work great! I've got my G11 now, and my adobe cs4 photoshop extended, next flash and tripod.
