When commenting on photos people often mention how certain parts of the pic shouldn't have been cropped. So I thought I'd link to an ACDsee news letter I received some time ago about Gestalt Theory, which is related somewhat to cropping. Here is the link (http://www.acdsystems.com/English/Community/ColumnsArticles/PhotoTips/photo-2004-12-29.htm?CMP=EMC-DINFY2004&CRA=20041229).

Hope you find it useful.

This confirms something I've been feeling for a long time. I see critiques about cropping too close and wonder how this person can say that unless they see the original. Only the person who cropped it knows what they had to work with. In a lot of candid shots it would be ruined if they didn't crop this, or that out of it. Thanks for posting the link.

There's loads more about this and lots more Gestalt stuff in Richard D Zakia's 'Perception and Imaging' - one of the most useful books I've bought.

Very interesting article. Next time I'm cropping I'll have a slightly different perspective (no pun intended!). Thanks.
