carbon costs a lot still. you're looking in upwards of $250-400 for them.
Is carbon stiff enough at those lengths to not bow?

well..considering that the quotes that we got form a few places in the us are above 1000 bucks +
paying 250-400 seems like a steal
DonJuanMair said that he knows someone who has it and says there is no flex, not sure what the lenght is..maybe he can chime in here

if you're being quoted $1000 then its probably closer to that.
CF hoods and tripods cost between $250-500+ depending on manufacturer, quality, size.

I was quoted a little under 1,500 for 3 5ft sections with connectors and holes drilled with pins. This is a company that has made a few booms over the years and they do nothing but make tubes so they know what they are doing. I also want to one day expand it to be a video boom with a few more sections but I'm going to have to make sure I can offset the cost before diving in head first...
Anyone find anything better?

This is custom work? If so, it costs what they say it costs...just like my custom portraiture. There would not be a "going rate" for a custom product.
You would have to actually contact some other maker and give him the same specifications to find a reliable second quote.

my friend actually got his CF poles fairly cheap since a company online was closing down....
