Personnaly I would think...yes. (IMHO...)
A lot of pictures comparison possibilities in chapter 2 and more.

I suspect the G11 10MP version will be the best one ever... I'm kind of worried it is done evolving in the direction I want it to though. Problem is other companies are starting to crank out compacts with DSLR sensors with far superior IQ. These cameras are only going to get smaller and better and I think it's going to be hard for Canon to compete in the "serious compact" market much longer without stepping up there game. I have a feeling the G-series is going to evolve into something more consumerish instead of more serious. I hope I'm wrong.

Compact with large DSLR sensors...
Are you talking about the new 4/3rds from Lumix/Olumpus?
If not, what brand and type?

I guess there are four so far that have been released, that I can think of.
Sigma DP1 and DP2, OLY EP1, and the new Panny GF1. They don't seem to be much bigger than my G9 with it's lens out.

Interesting article, but does that mean then if you want to print very large prints you would be better off with the G10 than the 12mp G11?

As noise is of concern, I guess yes.
It depends how large you want these prints to be.

OK for these cameras, but don't you think that considering prices these are in another category?

Sure they are... The low noise category.
Keep in mind this is first generation stuff. There is an oligopoly on the big sensor compact market right now. As supply and competition increase the prices will decrease.

OK good. But it will take at least a year before this competition increase ever happens.
But for now, don't you think that an entry level DSLR is able to kick their asses, when not considering slight size difference?
For the price of an EP-1 you get D5000 or T1i with possibly much better IQ and noise managing...IMHO naturally.
And also much broader choice of lens from them and third parties manufs.

Hell yeah, any modern DSLR will kick their ass. It all comes down to the tradeoff between size and performance. I like my G9 because I can take it to a party or on vacation without being conspicuous. I don't want to drag a DSLR to a get together with friends or through a crowded alley in Spain... but something the size of an EP-1 would be OK.
I don't think it's much bigger than a G9 with a 28mm prime, which is perfect for parties and such. It seems quite a bit smaller than the DSLR's I use.

You're right!
But this is what happens:
You aim for the G10/G11 but you're tempted by the 4/3rd's because of their sensor size.
But for the price, you're tempted again for DSLR for better specs!
One thing for sure, I'll be interested to watch compared shots between 4/3rds's and Canon G11 for instances.
Again...naturally scaling performances versus price.
Prices...assuming you want a system covering from basic wide angle to basic telephoto, let's say only 28 to 150mm.

Exactly,,, this is why I probably won't buy one until they get closer to the $500 US mark.
If you love photography,,, you should probably get a DSLR... and then if you can afford a compact later,, get one.

What is "oligopoly"?

I bought my G10 to no stand out when I'm taking pictures. But when I went to a party everyone told me "Wow that's a nice camera!"
:(
I love the picture quality though I wish the G10 was capable of having true lens changing instead of just adapters.

From wiki's official.
An oligopoly is a market form in which a market or industry is dominated by a small number of sellers
