Tonight I was playing a little with the 90-300 and saw a nice almost full moon... so i gave it a try. Shoot directly in jpeg (no raw here) then cropped and finally postprocessed heavily.
The first pic is what came out of the camera (100% crop), the second one is after PS (still 100%)
Shoot me ! :D

Pretty amazing stuff. I like the second image. Nice post processing job. The dark background does a great job of setting it off better.

Excellent!
Love the detail in pic 2.
Unusual subject, but well worth the effort.

fetching, that's what I get too  Actually, with the 100-400 you get slightly bigger moon.

Wait a second... I took mine with a crappy 90-300 and got that detail, how come that with the 100-400 you go worst ? Sounds impossible to me, or I am missing something.
I must say that of course my big moon is a crop of the original image but still the details were there. I do not have too much experience in shooting the moon but at this point I suppose that the fact that I took the original pic well before dusk gave me a better exposition ? Sounds reasonable ??

Don't expect too much with 200mm. Even with 400mm the moon is not big enough (before cropping).

The warm color of the moon should give way to a more grey color. Unless, it is rising, it just kind looks off. Also, make sure your exposure is such that your subject is not overexposed. The moon is a very tight line, but you can always brighten if need be. Don't be afraid to shoot manual and adjust. The photo shouldnt need a lot of post...this one only had a set of sharpen and sharpen edges. Its a good effort, try and see what the next time gets ya....

Great moon shots.
Try standing on a car, in order for the moon to fill the frame more. ;)
