Hi Guys,

I recently changed from Sony A700 to a New Canon 50d with 18-200mm Lens Kit.

I used to do a lot of off camera lighting using Sonys built in wireless mode and using the wireless Sony Flashguns. No wireless devices were required.

Most of my shooting is done in Manual mode so not worried about TTL etc.

Few things i need to know.

1. Does the Canon Speedlite 430 EXII work as a slave?
2. Does the Canons Speedlite stand/feet that come with it have a thread in the bottom to attach it to a lightstand?
3. Whats the Best deal and product to trigger the Canon flash mentioned above. (not cheap and nasty but not expensive like certain brands. PW.

Can someone explain how the 50d Wireless mode works? Can a non Canon trigger work with this system?

Thanks

welcome to the canon club. the 50D is an awesome machine.
canon 430ex ii does work as a slave.
no the feet doesn't have a thread at the bottom. you'll have to buy the stand adaptor.
i just bought a ctr-301p for 30 bucks. it has good reviews. want something better? cybersyncs are good i hear. 100+ bucks.
50D wireless mode? a non canon trigger/receiver combo can work for OCF.

Use two Canon flashes (580EX II or 430EX II) so you can use their built-in wireless modes to enjoy wireless manual control flash. It uses light signals so it can be very limiting. Thus eventualy you will want to use CyberSync or RadioPopper JrX RF triggers with them.

1. Yes, but it can not be a master. That is why it is cheaper :)
2. The one that came with my 580EX II does.
3. CyberSync
4. Yes

Realisticly you will want two 580EX II for the extra power and also so that you don't worry with which one is master or slave as they both can be set to one or the other. Then you will want RF triggers to overcome the Canon light signal limitations, then you will want Elinchrom Quadra for the extra power for your mains.

Yes 430s can be slaves. If you decide to go that way, you'll need a master - either a 580, 550, or ST-E2 (which does not flash on it's own).

CyberSyncs and RadioPopper JrXs are very highly rated - they're about $120 ish for a set.

I just got the Yongnuo RF-602 - very good considering the price ($40).

The speedlite itself doesn't but the plastic foot stand that comes with the flash (for table top placement I guess) has a thread below it and that could save you a few bucks to use as an adaptor.

1. As other have said, the 430EX can be used as a slave

2. The flash unit itself does not have threads for a light stand but the stand that is included with the flash does.

3. Since you'll be shooting manual and have no need for ETTL information you can get 3rd party radio trigger for a fraction of the price. I just picked these up and they are excellent for the price. Yongnuo RF-602 ($29.99 + free shipping + no tax @ dealextreme.com.

Thanks Guys,

Just bought the Following:

1 x Trigger
2 x Receivers

Yongnuo CTR-301P Flash Trigger

Hopefully it will do the Job.... I use manual settings for consistency so not worried about TTL etc.

Good luck! I've heard some good and bad things from that older Yongnuo set. I personally recommend the RF-602 as said above for just a few bucks more, but, as long as it works!
