I use a Rebel XS to shoot small town high school football which is played on very dark fields.

I recently came into possession of an old Sunpak 611 flash unit which will throw light from the sideline to the middle of the field. Of course the voltage it produces is outrageously high.

I have a Wein Safe Sync that I have used with other pre-digital flashes. However, I've been reading at various photography forums and found some opinions that with this particular flash even a Safe Sync is not enough protection for a digital camera.

Is anyone familiar with this?

why not use a wireless remote ... this way the flash isn't electrically connected to the camera at all.
